Fawking peanut gallery over here in this thread!!!
Lol!!!
The problem with the longer shackles is that it will change your pinion angle that you so carefully set.
Try the extra couple of leafs and see what happens. Maybe you'll get lucky.
Do you have a winch on the front yet? That's going to lower the front a bit as well. Maybe, winch, dual battery and that will sink the front enough to be level.
Wouldnt that happen either way?
If you are going UP, then you are going UP, right? So weather or not you raise the rear with new springs, shackles or leaves it all equates to the same issue with the pinion angle?
Or am I missing something which is entirely likely.
oddly enough....
I just went out and pulled a few dimensions with a tape and angle finder....
I stuck the angle finder on the floor and the floor is about level. Maybe a 1/2 a deg slope DOWN out of the garage. Stuck the angel finder on the tub....it MATCHES the angle of the floor.
So I pulled dimensions with a tape measure off the rocker panels, front to rear. front = 29 3/4 in (floor to tub) and the rear 30 in (floor to tub). So that implies that the rear is sloping UP. At least the tub, anyway.
Do you think it could be sort of an optical illusion with the bib being OFF and such. Visually, it LOOKS like its sloping down at the rear, but...the numbers say otherwise.
BTW...I did this on BOTH sides of the rig and the numbers came out the same.
Im gonna hold off on doing ANYTHING immediately with this I think.
I THOUGHT IT LOOKED LEVEL ;p
Think about what happens when you make the shackles longer. It changes the angle that the spring sits at rest and since the perch is bolted to the springs it changes the angle of the axle and thus the pinion.
There is some rule of thumb that every 1 longer a shackle is, it changes the pinion angle half a degree, or something like that. You could install the longer shackles and measure.
Just remember that you will tend to load the rear of your 40 pretty full for trips. Make sure you have enough load carrying capacity-adding more leaves or an AAL will do that.
Anyway, it sounds like you are close to OK and may not need to worry about it.
Set the alignment the best I could, adjusted the tie rod and then got the pittman arm set and then adjusted the drag link so the steering wheel is straight....little odds and ends.
I really AM hoping to avoid the shackle lengthening. I most likely WILL add a leaf to that rear pack though for that VERY REASON you described.
Add ram assist and you will be in love with the steering.
also with the front with no sheet metal on it the open void will make it look like the rear sits lower due to the wheel well being cut, also the metal will add some forward weight, maybe not much but some. Do like you plan and since it is level now get it all together and fiddle with that little bit of fine tuning later.
You do have a nice wench though.Yeah...Im figuring there will be about 100-150 lbs still to go on the front. Battery, brackets, rad, shroud AND the front clip.
Just wait and see and keep going for now.
Later down the road Ill do a winch, but...just cant afford it right now. PLUS...I have RustyTLC with me a lot. He's got one!![]()
If you choose to use the shackles, you could always shim the pinion angle if needed. What ever you do, it looks GREAT! keep up the good work.![]()
I think it looks like crap...
post pictures of your wife instead....
