I spent Sunday afternoon reading your thread. Great work! Very informative. great pictures. to me a thread without pictures is worthless!

My son and I are working on a 1984 FJ60 and have a 5.3 sitting in waiting.
My question is about the AC compressor. Did you use the stock GM compressor or convert to a Sanden type?
Thanks
Gary

Thanks! My thoughts exactly on the pictures!

I am using the GM compressor that came on the motor. The rest of the system is stock Toyota (with the exception of the modded AC amplifier and modded refrigerant lines), and functions like before.

Wow! With that radiator i'm assuming you can run wide open, fully laden in the middle of summer across the black rock desert with the AC running full blast and be fine!

That is great to hear!
Some say you have to change the variable ratio compressor for a Sanden, which requires an adapter to allow the Sanden to fit.
BTW. What body mounts did you use. I noticed they are not stock from the cross member picture.

And one more question. The cross member is straight with no bends or lower in the middle?

The compressor doesn't seem to care if it cycles.

Body mounts or motor mounts? The motor mounts are Advance Adapter. If I had a do-over, I would try to find some softer stock GM mounts and make a frame mount. These transfer a good bit of vibration. And I hear they don't last long.

TLC 4x4 made some for their kit that bolt in and use Corvette mounts (I think), but I hear they discontinued their kit. It would be worth investigating though. They bolt in to locate them in the perfect spot and are them welded. No motor test fitting required.

The crossmember is not flat, it does drop down from the frame about 2 or 3 inches.

^ maybe even covered in mud too :D

That's what I asked for! Hopefully that's what I got. We'll find out in two weeks :D

Sunray always used GM motor mounts.

If/when these die, I may convert.

It's worst when in drive, stopped, with the foot on the brake.

Agreed, have the same experience. Been thinking hard about new mounts.

Nice radiator, Cam! You keep raising the bar, it's pissing me off kinda. Not only do I need a flash radiator like yours apparently I need it riding on an 80 series suspension to be really cool. My wife's not going to be happy when the money starts flowing out again (she thought it was over with the engine conversion - Ha!)

Seriously, great job man.

Body mounts or motor mounts?

Body mounts is what I was referring to.

on the motor mounts, i went to the TLC site and the kit is not listed. I got the whole conversion kit from AA via Valley Hybrid which included the motor mounts and the more I read the less I like the AA motor mounts.

The kit never made it to the website. It's worth a phone call to see if you could get them to crank a set out.

I didn't think I had any body mount pics in here, I just did that a few weeks ago, but they are from Roger Brown/ 4crawler.com.

Easy...you will give away my secret plan. Our son is driving the 80 these days and it's getting up there in miles. He's got as much interest in vehicle maintenance as I did at his age. I'm half expecting a phone call one of these days that the motor is seized because he forgot to put oil in it (did I mention it leaks oil?) I will pretend to be upset and explain that the truck is too far gone to rebuild and the only logical solution is for me to graft the 60 body on to to its chassis and sell the rest.

Apologies to 80 enthusiasts who might be offended by those remarks :).

Did you ever considering keeping the 80 tcase and go AWD?

There's no such thing as an 80 enthusiast. That is a myth. They all dream of having a 40,55,60, 70 or 100 series.

I wanted to do the AWD t-case but didn't want to add any more work to the project (or buy another pricey adapter).

I would definitely do it if it had the time/$$$.

OK, I did call TLC. The kit is available, it includes stuff that I did not need. I only ordered the stuff that I need for my project which included the mount brackets and the 4L60 crossmember. Oh, and he had them on the shelf. I will post pictures when they arrive.

SWEET!!!

I'll be curious to see these mount brackets. Which motor mount does it use?

How much $$$ did that stuff run? If I remember right, the whole kit was pretty reasonable.

The cross member was 125 and the brackets were 43 each. The brackets use the stock GM motor mount. I will post the part number as soon as I get it.
The reason they do not advertise the kit is because it was developed for the E-Rod GM motor and the E-Rod motor is not available according to TLC. There was a 5.3 E-Rod motor and a 6.2 E-Rod motor. (There may have been more but those are the ones that I know about).
Basiclly a 5.3 E-Rod is the same motor as you find in pickups and SUVs, I think. The E-Rod 5.3 was rated at 320 HP

Awesome.

Regardless of the E-Rod availability, mounts and cross members are universal across all of the LS motors. The computer mounts should work with the GenIV motors. I hope they keep making these parts. Nobody buys them because they aren't advertised.

They are a better alternative in every way to fabbing it yourself. Nice move!
