Don’t hold your breath, Greek. Besides - isn’t the journey the important part? Everybody can’t knock this stuff out in a few days like you. :)

More rain in Northern CA means more time to test for leaks :)

Just finished our 2014 Christmas card. Note proper bezel placement (tech). Happy holidays to my pals and everyone here on Mud, hope to be back in the garage soon.View attachment 1005976
That's beautiful! Can I have one in Freeborn red please?

OK - so I think I've gone as far as I can without doing the knuckles. Noticed this oil leak, inside of the passenger-side front tire yesterday, I'm assuming the old seals (original I think) are finally giving up. Little oil spray inside the driver's side tire too.

Any pointers to a good, concise knuckle redo thread - search turns up lots (overwhelming amount) of info on this?

Opinions - how much to replace (everything?), guess I'll just order bearing, etc. from Kurt - or should I do Toyota for the bearings, seals, etc?

Can I do this (I know it's a messy job)? If I keep track of shim orientation do I need any special tools (aside from that big socket - size?). Right now it seems like the OME springs have settled a bit and it's driving better than it ever has - oil hasn't seemed to impact the brakes (yet).

New windshield washer motor came in and it looks like a spot on replacement.

Great thread. You're just down the road from me.

Just started reading the thread backwards, and something caught my eyes. Those washer motors from Toyota cost mega bucks, but there is an alternative.

Get your parts from Kurt or Georg and dive in. By the time you're done you will wonder what all the fuss was about. It's not as difficult as it might seem before hand. Get some new grease and shop towels and let us know if you hit a snag or have a question.

Hi Gus,

I'll be in HMB starting about Feb 25th or 26th, driving from Alberta. if you haven't done it by then sing out and I will give you hand if you like. Done quite a few over the years. Simple job just takes time and cleaning parts is hoot. Any kit with correct Koyo's will be fine. There a place SoCal with Koyo wheel bearing for cheap if you need them.
Thanks jb

I did it without even the big socket. Use Marlin's inner seals. Georg can set you up with a rebuild kit. Get a metric ton of newspaper and some good degreaser.
Thanks for the feedback Eddy - know Kurt, not sure who Georg is...

40s in Palo Alto :) - last one I saw was a Freeborn red at Stanford Shopping Center...

This was the best write up I could find quickly -> https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/minitruck-front-axle-disc-brake-conversion-for-dummies-faq.137225/

Although its not strictly a stock rebuilt the process is the same for mini/40/60 axles with discs.
Kevin - good to hear from you and thanks for the feedback/link. I need a little grease, too long out of the garage... truck has been running great though.

Jim - Look forward to seeing you even if you don't clean parts :) Is Koyo more or less the same quality/manufacturer as Toyota stock bearings? I'll probably go with Kurt but I think some of the stuff is still available through Toyota? Thinking of you last week, Dulce and I had lunch in HMB and I took a few photos after: http://gusbird.smugmug.com/Half-moon-bay/i-thrtRcM

Hi Gus and Fast Eddy,

Yes to bringing you a bottle of Havana Club, Have to go to town today will see if I can find some.
Yes to meeting in San Mateo for a beer, maybe Gus will come too.
Yes to wrenching on your 40 if needed.

Gus MrT used Koyo or Timken as OEM bearings, most likely yours are Koyo if nobody has been in there. Toyota just puts then a red box and doubles the price. Inner Koyo WB's are $17.25 each and outers are $13.45 The correct Koyo steep taper trunion bearings are about $20.00 each.
Also found an oil filter for 2F's made on Japan. Can't tell how big it is from the picture but it looks full size, may have to order one to see. The Wix 1515 is a good filter. I think old style engines like the 2F need the big filters. Modern engines have tighter tolerances and use 0-20 weight oil so the smaller filters are fine.

Like your pictures of Princeton. In picture #7 you captured the bow of friend Tom's slop your can see the jib boom.

Do you want me to bring any tools, especially the bushing driver to install the inner axle seals?

Thanks jb

Jim - kick myself for not buying a bunch of those big black filters when they were available (always bought one at time).

Don't have a bushing driver and don't have the big socket (or a fish scale for that matter) but I may manage to find one and get something done before you get here - don't want to create problems for you with the tools - are you driving back home or flying? I'll order kits from Kurt right away. Whatever happens we need to, at the least get together for a beer, etc.

I will make you a bushing drive for the inner seal that you can keep. The oem style seals are fine. The special seals are OK but not strictly necessary if the trunion bodies are set-up correctly. The stock set-up hasn't leaked for many years and miles that tells me it was set correctly from the factory.
You probably won't need wheel bearings but the Koyo's are pretty inexpensive and no big deal to change. You can order Koyo WB's from Kurt with your kit. You might want to order a 54mm socket from Kurt as well I would get the 3/8 drive one unless he only has 1/2 drive. They are about $21.00. I can bring mine if you like.
We are flying back then driving back to Alberta in May sometime.
As for the fish scale again not really necessary, you can get it very close by feel. The trunions just need a little preload so the housing doesn't move up or down along the king pin inclination.

The other way to go on filters is to use Denso which is a Toyota affiliate company. The filter number is 150-1004. I think there is a bit of over thinking in the whole filter game. :) If Fram was so bad there would be millions on engines lying on the side of the road dead from poor filtration.
If you scour E-bay I bet you could find some of the large Toyota filters for a competitive price.

See you soon.

Thanks jb
