Bumps on my 78’s rear tub/fenders?

x2, I wanna see your mirror mount. I also thought of wheel bearings/knuckle bearings with your apparent light-spot in the steering. Also check for play in your steering box/pitman arm. The steering box can be adjusted/tightened if needed.
 
Mirror mount - hate to put these up because the finish is so bad. :o All I had laying around was some screwed-up black rattle can. It could look a lot better. It's 14 GA sheet, hammer formed in a vice and welded up - rushed out to get a mirror up. Held on with two Allen cap bolts and nuts - one for each door "lug". Loosen the bolts and it will rotate in to just touch the dash - won't rotate out/forward. Patent Pending :grinpimp: - actually I thought the license plate adapter was more cool.

The tires might hit but I don't really know what I'm looking at. Running board height is 22.5" in the middle - that's to the bottom of the board.

The steering box on my old pickup was adjustable, but I thought the 40s steering box was only adjustable by tearing down and adding shims, etc.?

Gus, my '77 doesn't have that little tab on the clutch slave. Sorry to not be of help, but maybe it'll narrow down the model years/options for you. The mirror mount is simple, yet effective. With the amount of time it takes to pull off the doors and hardtop, having something like that that only took a few more seconds to mount isn't a bad idea. I don't like those aftermarket windshield-mount mirror arms anyway.

Thanks - sometimes simple is the hard part. I was ready to build a really dumb and involved setup for the license plate holder/lights before I rethought it and had the idea for the simple adapter. The mirror adapter was a little rushed - and it would be a lot nicer if I had access to a milling machine. I'll repaint it when the spray gun is up again.

You are doing a great job on your 40 and it looks even better in person than in the pictures. :)

Again, I think the steering components need just a little attention and it will make a huge improvement in how it feels when driving. It really doesn't seem to me that the castor is off by much and maybe not at all by the way it handled, just need to get some of the freeplay out of the wheel and it will feel a lot better.

I'll see if I can find the firewall bracket when I'm back home at the end of the week. It may have went with the lot of stuff I sold, but I'll check to see what I have that you might be able to use.

My only regret is I forgot to pull out the iPhone for a speedo check on 101 - I'll try to get to that today. It would have been easier with you driving :D

Mike thinks some tweaking of the tie rod offset and some play in the center arm/drag link (center arm rebuilt earlier - maybe needs some adjustment...) might help.

Also seems to be getting better the more it's driven. I'll post up any progress and whatever numbers I get from the alignment guys if/when in future.

Have you adjusted the steering gear yet? That can account for a lot of play.

Tightened up the center arm and I'm backing the main adjustment off much less than before. I'll see what that does moving and make the other changes one step at a time.

Is a 78 manual steering box even adjustable - anyone have a picture of where the adjustment screw/nut is? i think I have a fill/overrun for the gear oil but I thought any gear adjustment was a teardown/shim kind of thing?
 
I think it's behind the heat shield.

There is an adjustment there. I'm not sure if it is intended to adjust the play in the gear though. I believe I adjusted mine as per the FSM, but I don't remember what it says there now.

What was the talk about power steering a page or two ago?

You mention power steering (434) but I don't think anyone said I have it? :D

Thanks - I'm making this the last thing I try. My manuals don't seem to offer an "on vehicle" procedure.
