Who ever thought up of the bread trick to knock out the pilot bearing, I hate you.... Big mess and the bearing didn't budge, the bearing is rusted in there and porous a lot of times, just like mine.... big mess... heading to Harbor Freight to get a cheap puller.

This is one of those purchases where the seller was just a temp owner, knows nothing about it. Had to do with owing money and part of payment was done with the FJ40. Hence no history, so I reached out to previous owner but no response yet, we'll see. I'd love to get the hardware that is missing and I'm sure laying around in some garage.

The air filter mounting was one of the first things I noticed. definitely different. Also, I'm trying to find out what the pipes which got pinched are for. did they have EGR in 1973 and this got de-smogged? hmm...

Here are some pictures of the Engine bay of my 73. It was manufactured in Oct 72. The PO did the restoration and I'm still learning what is OEM and what is not. Let me know if you want any more pictures if they would help.

HOT or NOT? How to tell if you need to machine your flywheel? And is it worth it?

Most people say machine if you're changing your clutch. Any reason not to machine if you're not changing the clutch? (still fresh)... Could it create some issues?

Imo, it should operate the same as it did b4 disassembly. I might change the t/o bearing.

Less than a Hundy to get it refinished, do it. Fresh clutch and flywheel will give you half a lifetime of service. When I did mine a few years back I was replacing the original clutch, I’ll be dead when it’s time for the next clutch job. IMO I’d do it while it’s apart. I’d also knock out the rear main seal, and oil pan gasket as well while it’s all torn down. Just a few bucks and a few hours of work for the peace of mind knowing you don’t need to go back in any time soon.

I was just looking at that main rear seal... then I asked myself, will that be the last thing? haha.

Got the flywheel refinished, it still has some cracks in there, they must be deep. The guy told me it's all OK, nothing to worry about. (Red is due to ambient lighting, half the place may be a brothel, who knows.)

Ordered a new clutch pad, that's the good news. Slowly ordering everything in parts instead of in a big kit, not a good idea.

Dry fitted the pressure plate and it doesn't look like it fits. It also looks like it was a past issue as there are some dents in some spots, likely from forcing it to fit, WITH A HAMMER.

How centered does the pressure plate need to be? The fly wheel is centered, and the clutch pad will be centered. Perhaps the pressure pad, since attached to the flywheel, doesn't need ot ber centered, but it would potentially cause an uneven spin and vibration?

The bolt holes in the flywheel center the pp.

Yup, except I can't get all sides to nicely fit into the flywheel slot. one side is always out. Option is to buy a new cover or bang it into place like PO.

Or, maybe take a grinder to the highpoints on the outer edge of the PP until you can fit it without a hammer

Easy Button!

good point. I thought about that, but if i only grind the side that doesn't fit, it doesn't center the cover nor the pressure plate.. I would have to grind all sides judging the center based on my eyes. Ooof... I may try it out or I may just buy the cover but still reuse springs and pressure plate.

Taking advise and cleaning up the oil pan. Looking good in there from below, not so impressive from above looking at the bottom of the pan. Anything special to be done while in there? clean the oil pump filter?

One thing I have to say is that it's obvious where the oil leaks can develop in the front crankshaft cap. it definitely loses width.

I tried to buy a new cover from ToyotaPartsDeal.com and this is the 6th straight part that I've ordered that they've cancelled. Can't really trust them they know what is real and what is not. It seems that they have a program that searches through toyota dealerships and matches up the order. Must be a bug in there.

Anyway, I went ahead and grinded a couple of sides carefully and now it fits nicely and evenly. Simplest solution is sometimes the best and cheapest.

Also, painted by oil pan and now it's super sexy....

Question, how much play is OK when turning the front flange in the front third member? I'm seeing around 35-40 degrees free play. Couldn't find it in the FSM.

As in the backlash?
