Brighter Headlights for FJ60???

After a week-long email string run-around just trying to buy some lights from Stern I gave up and no longer will buy anything from him or recommend him for anything.

That is too bad. I have been buying stuff from him for decades. Never had an issue. I just bought a bunch of stuff for my 62. It took him some time to get it all to me, but he did email me to let me know he was going to be delayed on one of the parts. The wiring harness was top notch. I saw a lot of similar harnesses on Amazon for a lot cheaper, but I cant imagine them being of the same quality.

Can you explain this? This makes no sense to me. Not sure what you mean that I have to learn to see? From my reading, you may think you see better with bright white (blueish) light, but you don't. Additionally, this type of bright white light is really bad in fog, snow, heavy rain. And it also sucks for other drivers. Would love to learn something, but for now I'll stay away from the "white" light.

I mean that your eye has evolved around sunlight and fire and you are just naturally better at comprehending things lit by a more yellowish light. When you switch to lights that are almost pure white you can still see but it takes your brain a little while to relearn what it is seeing because this new light is completely beyond what you are used to.

AFAIK, your eyes see light by light hitting the rods and cones in the eye which causes an electrical impulse to be transmitted to the brain. There is no way to learn your eyes to work different. And these rods and cones don't work as well with bright white light. Again, I could be wrong, but this is how I believe it to work.

All I know is as I age I need more light. Different light for different situations. At work I like 5k-6k LED. At home I like warm 2-3K. In the car I think I am more used to the halogen shade which more on the warm side, I am not a fan of the LED headlights. Why? I dont know, maybe I am just not used to them.

I just redid my shop with all LED tubes. These new tubes mount with little clips and can be linked together. They are the bomb!

Yes that is the mechanics of how your eyes work. But I know when I get in a car with halogen headlights I feel like it takes less brain work on my part to understand what I am seeing vs when I hop into a car with hid/led.

I had laser eye surgery in 2007 and I remember how overwhelming a food store was the first time I went in after surgery. With glasses you are aware of peripheral vision but your focus is on what is beyond the lens. After surger it was like my brain had to process an additional 40% viewing area and it was exhausting until got used to my new eyes.

So yes rods and cones yada yada but I’ve always anecdotally felt that my brain doesn’t process the whiter light as quickly. Maybe it’s because more stuff is lit or reflections are harsher or shadows more defined...etc.

The secret is to get him on the phone. I think most of the emails are copy and paste type pages but with a lot of great information. his website is nothing special but it does have a lot of great information on it. Then if you can get him on the phone he is a wealth of knowledge. I left a message the first time and he called back later that evening. Put the order in and hopefully I will have them end of the week or next week.

So as stated before, I found these Cibie's on Amazon that are supposedly the real deal. From what everyone is saying, the reflector in the housing will make the biggest difference on a quality housing vs. moving to LED/Truck-lite type setup. DS charges about $150 for his housings but while I would rather support a small guy like him, the $50+ difference is a bit too much to pass on Amazon. Guess I know what I am asking for from Santa.

Nice find!!! Its all supposedly in the housing. Post some pics when santa delivers these. :santa::clap: I did however notice you will still need the converter for an H4 and that doesn't include the bulbs. So the price is actually pretty close to DS. Or am I missing something?

Already have the SLCFJ62 upgraded wiring harness and have Hella 100/90 bubls in the old housings.

H4 housings are plug and play in a fj60. Stock wiring works for stock bulbs. All the heavier harness does is beef up the wiring and help reduce voltage drop between battery/alt and filament.

You will need an adapter harness to run led.

The stock wiring is barely able to power standard wattage bulbs. It doesn't even do those to their full potential due voltage drop / lack of current carrying ability. I would plan for a wiring upgrade if you do H4s. Plus, with the wiring upgrade, you can run higher wattage bulbs are really get some serious light.

And putting LED bulbs in a H4 housing is just a bad idea.

I’ve had the following:

Stock sealed beams
Hella housings on stock wiring with 55w bulbs
Hella housings with LED bulbs on stock wiring
Hella housings with 80/100 bulbs and an arb wiring harness.

I’m happiest with the final option. Easy to bolt in quickly and they work great. I carry spare bulbs just in case because the higher wattage bulbs are supposed to be a shorter life span, but a year in and they’re still good.

Yeah, think all signs are pointing to the fact that I need to at least upgrade the housing to those Cibie's I found on amazon. Aside from that my 90/100w bulbs are at least 3yrs old so probably time to replace them as well.

Are these Cibie’s DOT approved?
I wouldn’t care, but I’m afriad they won’t pass state inspection.

Not really sure... Looking at the product number online it looks as though they are if the listing is legit.

Did this require the polarity reverse extra module?
Did you buy the ARB M002? Anything else for wiring?

No, Yes and no.

Historically H4’s were not DOT Certified but many of them are now. However, you would need an incredibly strict inspection station to fail you for non dot headlights unless they were super obviously illegal.

Worst case you pop your old sealed beams in for inspection day and swap back after

I've had conversion H4's on two vehicles and never had an inspection issue. Nobody checks, and like you said...just swap them out for that one day.
