Bleeding brakes: MityVac or Motive?

??? it will take me more than ten minutes to get the wheels off and the rig on blocks, tools/fluids out and ready, etc... I am not a job shop. Bleeding is always the easy part.

80s are known to ruin the MC with the 2-hooker pump method. Happened to me twice, a buddy and Cdan as detailed here Brake Booster or Master Cylinder or both?

The only prep is grab the brake fluid bottle, open the hood, take the cap off the MC and get under the truck with your little wrench and get to work bleeding with your hooker GF. Seriously, it takes 10 minutes. Why would you take the wheels off? You will have the job done before you can get your gizmo out and hooked up.

If there is that much crap/corrosion in the master, to cause the seals to fail, I would like to know about it. Much prefer to find out about it in the shop, than out in the woods.

Amen!

because every-time i bleed the brakes i am also performing other maintenance/repairs that require the wheels be removed (hardline/softline replacement/inspection, caliper rebuild, pad/rotor inspection/replacement, repack wheel bearings F/R, birf maintenance, parking brake shoe adjustment, etc., etc., etc...). like i said, i'm not a job shop, i'm not in a hurry, i like to combine other work into a single project, i'm not hiring hookers, and not trying to perform a 10-minute brake bleed. but, i would like to see you and your hooker do it. that would be art in motion to spend no more than 120-seconds at each bleed point and less if the ABS module needs to be activated after replacing the MC or a caliper.

Man this would make a terrific video.

"Hooker speed bleeding"

There are plenty of videos like that on the net. If you have a friend or family member to help you don’t have to pick up a hooker.

This thread was mighty entertaining, and even a little bit educational.
I never saw so much talk about hookers on a thread about brakes.
Cheers!

Before he moved out of town, I learned a lot from a Cruiser Lexus master tech.
He bleed my brakes in 10 min, if that.
Nice tip: turn the bottle of fluid upside down in the resi, don't worry about running it dry.

I'm going to try those simple hand vacuum pumps at the bleeders this time.
I would go for the hooker, but you know, covid...

little update, learn from me:

-wasted a lot of time with the vacuum pump. Oh the promise of simple, easy work. Like sitting on the beach, under the Cruiser.
-Could only pull one line and ended up having to replace 4 bleeders.
-wheeling with no dust caps probably corroded and clogged the speedbleeders.

So, what did mr. dummy do? Buy O'reilleys cheapo bleeders because...impatient.
First one didn't seal, leaked like a sieve.

Finally ordered the OEM bleeders.
Then what did mr. dummy do?
Keep using that stupid vacuum and waste a couple hours fighting leaking around the bleeder and no real pulling of fluid.

-So mr. dummy finally remembered what he learned from his old Lexus Master tech friend and had the mrs pump them brakes.
Woosh- cleared all 5 bleeders in 10 min.

Lesson: Don't get fancy, don't be a dummy, don't waste time and money.
The Cruiser is simple. Get OEM, pump them brakes and bleed all 5 fast.

I got a Mity Vac and have used it a lot.

This is my preferred tools these days though.

Works excellent.

That was my experience trying to vacuum bleeder. No matter how hard I tried I would get air leaking in at the bleeder. I spent a couple of hours trying to get the easy way to work. I finally just did the pump method by myself. I had a tygon tube looped up into a gatorade bottle. Pump the brake, put a piece of wood holding it down, loosen the bleeder valve. Repeat until clear. This was a PITA, but it did work. Next time I'll wrangle a helper.

Good thing I can use the vacuum pump for other things like checking for leaks or bleedng my intercooler.
@GeoRoss yes, soooo quick and easy!

Even easier if you just leave the bleeder open with the hose submerged in the gatorade bottle. The bubbles will rise up through the fluid but none will be sucked back in. Makes quick work of flushing/bleeding brakes yourself.

The little MityVac has been used for testing the EGR valve and other stuff. Just sucks for brakes.

Run your bleed hose into a partially filled container of brake fluid. Pump to your hearts content. No helper needed.

That is essentially what I did. I probably went through much more brake fluid doing this by myself, but I did it by myself. I just helped a friend flush his brakes and it is much easier with two people and easier on the brake fluid.

I do that even with someone pumping the brakes. Easy to see the bubbles, and when you have purged the line, as you say.👍
two person method is also a lot less cleanup. tube and bottle, instead of just more unnecessary gaak to fiddle with.

Tried the MityVac vacuum style and agree that's total junk.
I went to the MityVac MV6480 and have liked it quite a bit:
Amazon product ASIN B005MVBFM4That coupled with the Motive 1820s:
Amazon product ASIN B00942XQ06And you've got a hooker free solo bleed system that in my experience does a good job of pushing the air out of the LSPV and ABS.

Yikes!
For that price you could get several hookers.
What's up with all the people who don't have family or friends to help and can't find any hookers.

I'd pay that to not see my wife roll her eyes and complain about having to pump the brake pedal. It's funny/sad because she'll go on a 4-5 mile run and be just fine, but 5 minutes of pumping a brake pedal seems like torture.

And I can't hire a hooker because I don't have seat covers. So I bought the Motive tool.
