Removing the Windows on the FRP Top

I decided to work on the top a little since the body is still gone. It's finished, but I don't have time to get it until June 17th.

The rear sliders needed the gaskets replaced, so the slider had to be pulled. Honestly, I dreaded this, but it was actually a piece of cake!. Simply pull off the trim on the interior. Run a utility knife around the edge to cut the sealant.

Once you do that, the window almost falls out! Note their is only sealant on the upright edge. Make sure you don't overdo it when reinstalling, or the water that gets in will not be able to get out! Then your frame will be toast!

Remove the small screw holding the center piece to the frame, and push it sideways to remove it. There is a small plastic run on the center piece. It may have stayed in the window frame. Don't lose this. You will need it for reinstall. I pictured it on the old center piece, and the new piece next to it.

Slide the glass to the center, and spread the frame to pop the glass out. Pretty easy!

Not much rust in the frame, but make sure you look it over and clean it up. I'll just scrape this off and seal it up

drill a tiny drain hole to let moisture in the future drain out.
side note:
you can get SS glass slides to replace the factory a person has a set too far gone.

Getting the headliner out! What not to do!

I spent quite a bit of time getting the top ready for a new headliner, all of it getting the old one out.

This post is about what to do, and specially what not to do.

First of all, the headliner and the foam will not come out together. So just rip the headliner off, and do the foam next.

The foam is glued on, so I tried a number of ways to get it out.

Scrape with a putty knife--NOT SUCCESSFUL
Wire wheel it off--BIG MESS, DON'T TRY IT
Wire Brush it off--WAY TOO MUCH TIME, STILL BAD RESULTS!

Here is what you do.

Have the top on a table or stands up side down.

Go buy 3 cans of this. About $17 per can

With just the foam remaining, start drenching the foam. I know--it takes a lot because the foam holds it. That's why you got 3 cans. 2 cans to do the drenching, one for cleanup. Once you get a section covered --do it in 3 or 4 sections--go have a beer or mow the lawn.

Now that the lawn looks good, come back with a flexible blade putty knife, and gloves and it scrapes right off. Have a garbage can very near . Continue to do this for the other sections, with a beer in between (or not:))

Once it is all scraped off, now you have the residue. Lay paper towels over the whole thing, and soak then with the solvent. takes about a half a can. Let it sit for about 30 minutes. Then take the towels 2 sections (Towel squares) at a time, and wipe all the residue off. You may need to scrape some of the thicker parts. The towels hold the solvent, and then worked great for wiping it off.

Done! Ready for the new one to be glued in.

I am having a fabric shop do that. It is nearly impossible to find good color foam backed perforated headliner. So I bought just the headliner vinyl, and the shop has 1/8" foam, and will glue it in and then glue the headliner to it

yep, cleaning off the old headliner is a bugger.
if you take a look at the thread where i chopped down a 74 top to fit a 70 ragtop you will see what i used for a liner.
real quiet and improved the heat retention (or AC if you live in a hot climate)
has worked real well

love your work, a true artist

Thanks Wayne

It's BaaaaaCK

Picked the 74 up this weekend. Just shot some pics with my phone. Long assembly process now begins. The easy part is over:) I have to take the flares off and adjust and glue the rubber strips

Pics are with my cell phone, so they aren't the best

any updates?

Funny you should ask! I haven't done much of anything since I picked it up from paint. It is summer, and I keep thinking of how long winter is, and I will need something to do in the shop. But coincidently it was kind of rainy today, so I did some little things. Mounted the windshield frame, and wiper relay rods and motor, door tops, weatherstripping on drivers door, put the rear doors together. I can't remember which way the spare tire mount goes. Is it upside down?????

AND I got my door panels back that I had redone. since the left side is now the drivers side, the power window and door lock switches needed to be moved to that panel. So I sent the whole panels off, and had new boards cut, and had them recovered. Lost the cloth, but I'm OK with that. They will be about the last thing to go on.

I'm thinking I need to get the wire harness back in, and rearranged for LHD

Hey Roger,

Sorry I couldn't make it last week but we worked longer hours than we anticipated.

The tire carrier shown on your photo is on the correct position.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Alberto. Work always gets in the way:frown:

Door and side panels

If you are interested in redoing your door panels, it was pretty reasonable. $400 + shipping for all 6 panels, in any color you want. Front doors, rear doors and rear side panels. That included new backing boards. The pattern he put on mine was to try to match OEM, since he was not doing cloth inserts. He could also do no padding or design, which might be more durable

He should have patterns for BJ70 rollup windows, and BJ74 Elec windows. You may have to send him your old panels for BJ74, as mine switched to LHD.

PM me if interested
