Getting the headliner out! What not to do!
I spent quite a bit of time getting the top ready for a new headliner, all of it getting the old one out.
This post is about what to do, and specially what not to do.
First of all, the headliner and the foam will not come out together. So just rip the headliner off, and do the foam next.
The foam is glued on, so I tried a number of ways to get it out.
Scrape with a putty knife--NOT SUCCESSFUL
Wire wheel it off--BIG MESS, DON'T TRY IT
Wire Brush it off--WAY TOO MUCH TIME, STILL BAD RESULTS!
Here is what you do.
Have the top on a table or stands up side down.
Go buy 3 cans of this. About $17 per can
With just the foam remaining, start drenching the foam. I know--it takes a lot because the foam holds it. That's why you got 3 cans. 2 cans to do the drenching, one for cleanup. Once you get a section covered --do it in 3 or 4 sections--go have a beer or mow the lawn.
Now that the lawn looks good, come back with a flexible blade putty knife, and gloves and it scrapes right off. Have a garbage can very near . Continue to do this for the other sections, with a beer in between (or not

)
Once it is all scraped off, now you have the residue. Lay paper towels over the whole thing, and soak then with the solvent. takes about a half a can. Let it sit for about 30 minutes. Then take the towels 2 sections (Towel squares) at a time, and wipe all the residue off. You may need to scrape some of the thicker parts. The towels hold the solvent, and then worked great for wiping it off.
Done! Ready for the new one to be glued in.
I am having a fabric shop do that. It is nearly impossible to find good color foam backed perforated headliner. So I bought just the headliner vinyl, and the shop has 1/8" foam, and will glue it in and then glue the headliner to it
