Fun times.. and a whole lot of “while I’m at it…”
-head gasket
-water pump
-t-stat
-hoses and clamps replace all
-coolant temp sensor in t-stat housing
-low coolant alarm sensor in lower hose
-rebuilt injectors
-drill and tap manifold for pyrometer
-oil cooler inspect and clean
-factory oil pressure sensor
-redarc oil pressure sensor
-VSV
-alternator brushes and internals

Shouldn’t take too long:worms:
Anything else I should think about while I’m there?

Was yours an original fiber head gasket? Overheating?

Also are you using the factory turbo?

Head bolts?
New OEM intake/exhaust gaskets, don’t cheap out here

It was the original fiber head gasket and was starting to overheat and consume a bit of coolant.
Turbo is original
I’ve been collecting parts for this for a while and just needed the motivation to finally dig into it

Everything’s come apart decently and nothing concerning so far.

I see lots of scraping in my future

Strangely, I dropped mine off at a shop last night to get the MLS head gasket put in.
I'm not doing that outside on my own.

A carbide scraper works really well to clean up the block. Just have to be careful to keep it level and not scratch it. Laying it flat and pulling it back towards you is a good way to start until you get used to using it.

Make sure the machine shop surfaces the head to the correct finish for an MLS head gasket. The smoother the better, 20-30ra.

I just went through this a month ago with my 13bt. luckily my headgasket was bad, but wasnt baked on so it came off in one piece with very minor scraping/cleaning afterwards.

Hows your pushrod cover looking? i forgot to reseal mine while i had the head off since its easy to do without it in the way. whoops.

Head is heading to the machine shop in a few days so I’ve got some time to get everything ocd clean and ready to go back together. Took the oil cooler cover off and was shocked at how clean it was. Guess that system flush I did last year worked better than I thought.

Just got a call from the machine shop, they’re concerned that if they have to deck the head more than anticipated it will require a valve job as well.

Anyone have thoughts on where to source some some valve seals in short order???? (head is supposed to head to the shop on Tuesday and I’d like to have the parts for them at the same time)

@FJBen did you find a local source when you rebuilt your 13bt?

Deck the block? Or did you mean resurface the head?

I did not have a source locally for the valve seals, I had the ahead of time. @cruiseroutfit may have them and can fast ship?

Part number: 90913-02051

If they don’t may EBI Extreme Bends cruisers in Vancouver?

We stock the OEM Toyota# 90913-02051 at Cruiser Outfitters, they are not in our retail system but if you call (801-563-1277) and order 8 x 90913-02051 we should have no problem shipping them tomorrow. Unfortunately (for shipping purposes), we have a company party tonight at the Land Cruiser Heritage Museum and UPS / USPS just left so nothing will ship until tomorrow. I'm pressing 'Post reply' and heading down there myself :D

Awesome! I searched the cruiserteq site and didn’t see them, I guess I gave up too quickly. I’ll call tomorrow!

Thanks

Jealous! There’s just so many things I wanted to do “while I was in there” as well as give it a good clean and look over everything that a shop
Would have cost me a fortune!

If the phone sales team says we don’t have them, tell them “Kurt says they are in a red bin ‘unassigned’ bin upstairs titled, diesel overhaul parts” and they will know who to send to get them :D I’m headed out camping this weekend with the Wasatch Cruisers but Olly at the shop manages the un-assigned parts so he’ll snatch em.

We have ~8000 parts in our retail system, ~3100 on CruiserTeq.com. And then we have thousands in what we call “unassigned” meaning our parts buyer crews (Bryce, Grey, myself) know we have them, where we get them and how much we pay, retail, etc. They are on the to-do list to add to our retail and e-commerce (happens simultaneously these days). We get these parts when ordering for future offerings but also special orders for customers, they want 1 so we buy 3, or shop projects we do, we buy a few extra for the next time. I don’t know that we’ll have it solved before I retire :D

Yes. I am paying for this work to be done instead of spending Spring Break at the Grand Canyon.
I am trying to figure a way to get rusty exhaust parts blasted and painted while they send the head out to be machined.

Ya, they have the parts but no one knows what to charge for them, so they can’t get it shipped today as I had hoped 😅 oh well

They can absolutely ship today, we still have 3 hours to get things boxed up before they leave. I'm getting them pricing now.

EDIT: Jason will be calling you shortly. Sorry for the back/forth on seals. I reaaaaaally need to get all those parts added to regular inventory. To be fair we'll sell about 8 of those seals and use about 8 in-house annually, so they are looooow on the to do list. :D
