Then on the test drive I blew out a boot and lost all boost. I limped it home, smoked out the entire neighborhood and found more oil on the charge pipes than I'm comfortable with. This could explain why she smokes so much. Dieselheads , how normal is this? How badly should I worry.

All our 4BT swaps are so different. Is that your line leaving your intercooler?

Happy New year to you as well!
Hope I'm not jinxing myself, but my intake stays dry.
Do you have one or two turbos? Might have to rebuild them.

I think you're either looking at the a.c. line or the wiring harness.

Ah, no that line is entering the intercooler. Sorry updating this while getting dressed. I didn't actually look at the pic the first time .

The turbos are pretty cheap and easy to rebuild. As for the oil I had that issue with my Jeep CRD. It was a known issue that the oil ate the crappy rubber factory rubber. I also just replaced the intake boot on my Ford due to the same issue. I’m convinced old diesels leak, spray, and consume oil as a norm.

Thanks gents. This will be a next year project. Maybe tomorrow morning. Taking the princess out tonight.

That does look like excessive oil. I’d pull off the boots to both the big and little turbo compressors to see if one or the other are leaking.

I recently had to rebuild my big turbo because it was leaking oil passed the compressor seals (and the turbine seals) and getting oil in the intake. Then my little turbo was just pushing it through into the intercooler.

Man, I was worried you'd say that. Big red seems to go down whenever I plan on taking a long trip in it.

Hold the phone.

The matrix oil seals inside the CHRA of the turbo seal based on pressure differential. As load on the engine goes up, so does boost, and as RPM increases, so does oil pressure. When you blow a boot, you have a huge pressure differential between the oil pressure and charge pipe, and the matrix oil seals can not keep the oil in anymore. Aka, oil pressure comes up, turbo is being driven by the exhaust gas, but there's no boost pressure at all.

While you may need to rebuild the turbo because you drove it (for a while?) without the charge pipe connected, the reason there's so much oil is because of the above. Don't stress about it. Clean the pipes as you desire and reconnect everything, then monitor oil consumption. That's all you need to do.

Happened to me once. Looked like someone dumped a gallon of oil in the engine bay. Cleaned it up, hooked the pipes back up, no issues since.

And that’s why we have this forum Johnny. Experience is nice to have in these situations.

Thanks for chiming in Johnny. I'm out for training for the next few weeks but will do this when I get back and drive it some more.

Home for a day. Checked play in the turbo shafts, there was none . Oil levels are normal. Reconnected the boot and turned it on. Seems to run just fine. I'll drive it for a bit today then when I return from the border and see how she does.

Got back from the border this morning and worked on Big Red for a bit. Planning a camping trip for the weekend with the family. While filling up diesel, this beauty pulled up next to me.

She sounded mean.

Just completed roughly 900 miles round trip to west Texas and back with zero issues. Towed a trailer and drove up to 6700 ft at speeds between 65 and 75 mph. Saw the eclipse and blood moon, froze our butts off and returned safely with lots of thumbs up along the way from other drivers. Will post up pics soon.

Sounds like a great time and the blood moon eclipse was an awesome erie sight last night. Glad to hear no issues with Big Red.
