Big Tank

The Man-a-fre at $1195.. is looking like the easy solution...bolts right in... heck I paid $1000 to have a custom 25 gal tank above the frame rail in my 55....and if you add two Jerry Cans you'd be pushing 50 gal. I ordered a bell housing and suspension lift for my 55 from them and everything went well.

How many do you want Tim? They are easier to find than the tanks. Noone has any need for them here.

I'd like one or two as well! (dual filler neck assembly).

I'm sure it wouldn't be hard for an aluminum fab shop to make a tank to fit our trucks... they make custom tanks for boats all the time. It's on my to-do list, right after the 4x4 Labs rear bumper.

Yeah I think it is the easiest solution. One of the reasons I would like with a center mounted tank is a balanced load. With MAF's 40gal, you're looking at 320lbs on the drivers side, talk about cruiser lean. Haha. Probably over thinking things.

You....over thinking things?.....never :D

Didn't know it was on the drivers side.....just need a big friend to balance out the load

Dont know what shipping would be worth. But we throw reserve tanks away here. Any lpg install places usually have a few laying around.

Do you carry external tanks at all? Are there enough gas stations in the outback to keep your vehicle fueled? Do you throw them away because you don't go into the Outback? I have to carry extra tanks on my bumper when I go hunting in west Texas or I'll run out of gas. How big is your primary tank?

Just spoke with my friend who fits lpg systems. He doesnt have any tanks as he keeps throwing them away. Has thrown away about 20 of them :).

Yes we carry atleast 1 fuel can.
Usually plan our trip knowing where the gas stations are and how far between fill ups.
We throw them away because our 80 models came with sub tanks from factory. And most FZE owners remove the sub tank to fit a lpg tank instead.
Main tank is 90 litres (24 us gallons) and sub tank is 40 litres (10.5 us gallons).

But mine is a factory turbo diesel, so even with 35's, 4.1 diff gears and 5" lift, and loaded. I have a range of 725 miles + the 5 gallon back up.

Would a 20ish gallon tank tucked up high in the spare location (above the frame rails) be above the stock tank? What I'm thinking is a tank that would gravity drain in to the stock tank therefore eliminating the need for any switches or wiring or pumps. You'd just need the dual filler neck. Or, even better, reroute the stock filler to the higher aux tank and let it fill the primary via the feeder hose.

Now I'll wait for someone to tell me I'm crazy.

Your crazy :). Why would you want to do that? They drink from seperate tanks. Id say all your wiring, plugs and lines are already there to do this (have to get someone to check).

I thought the OEM sub tank just transfered/pumped fuel from it to the main tank. I don't think there's an extra set of unused fuel lines going to the fuel rail in US 80s.

I'll say it AGAIN. The petrol 80's do NOT pump from either tank. It is a transfer pump system.

The diesel 80's pump from either tank.

Just SEARCH - this whole subtank, stock wiring, fuel transfer has been already beaten to death on this forum.

You can either buy the missing parts that our US petrol 80's do NOT have (to make it a factory setup) or you can roll your own transfer system (which is what I did).

The threads on doing the former and later already exist in this 80 subforum - search....

cheers,
george.

Fingers crossed. The diesels drink from each tank. Hopefully the us models will do the same. If not its pretty easy to set up.

I had an aux 40 gal with the overhead console and everything and I pulled it and sold it. Restricted my wheeling ability and a LOT of extra weight. I would rather have a thin aux tank ~10 gallon no more. Mine was set up to transfer from aux to main tanks and I would have preferred to feed from both directly to the engine. FWIW

Factory subtank retrofit as close as possible to totally stock (more $$):

https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/213266-oem-subtank-retrofit-install-project-pics.html

My factory subtank install with non-oem wiring/control:

http://www.george4wd.taskled.com/auxtank.html

My install is likely one of the first factory subtank installs on a US model (installed 2001). It is nominally a 50 litre tank. It tucks up VERY high given it fits above where the spare tyre fits. It provides a decent amount of extra fuel for most places in the US without weighing a stupid amount or hanging too low etc.

The transfer pump setup works just fine since the capacity is about 13 US gallons, so when the main tank drops to about 1/3 left, you know the whole amount can transfer. No subtank gauge needed. My wife primarily uses our 80, filling the main & sub is a total non-issue for her. Transferring from the sub is a total non-issue.

The entire install has been flawless in all the years it has been in. The ONLY maintenance has been replacement of one hose and tightening one clamp due to time/age. I can't imagine going on any trip without knowing that extra 50 litres is safely stored and available for use.

It passes and always has passed Kalifornia Bay Area smog inspection/test.

A few last points:

- One person mentioned gravity feed... that is ILLEGAL afaik.

- 2nd Direct fuel transfer to the engine. Consider what will cutoff that pump in case of an accident. The factory high pressure pump has cutoff controls in case of an accident.

cheers,
george.

Spare tire is on the rear.
I made a stainless steel tank in the place where the spare tire was; about 100 l extra capacity.

I rerouted the fillerneck into the spare tank, which overflows on top into the original fillerneck of the original tank. (takes a while to fill up 180 l:)).

the bottom of the spare tank sits higher than the bottom of the original tank, so I use a small petrol line to connect the spare tank with the original tank at the bolt to empty that tank. I used a banjo-bolt for that.

So, all I have to do is fill the tanks and no worries for 1200 km.

Factory subtanks became an expensive proposition several years back. I'm sure there is demand if one could re-introduce them at a reasonable price.
