Another update on the bi-fold seals: They aren't in yet. I'm getting pretty anxious myself. Hopeully they get here this week...

I bought the green '66. Going to bring it home this weekend. It has just about all the hardware for the rear bi-fold that I can use in the restoration of my '64 top. The hardtop sides are in good shape. Since the PO installed corner windows in my '64, I might use the '66 sides.

The fiberglass top on the '66 has seen better days. Appears that the most of the rivets that hold the gutter to the fiberglass top boken. Hopefully it doesn't fly off on the trip home. I might actually ratchet tie the top down just in case.

The plan is to use the '66 to run around in this summer while I work on the '64...

Congrats on that '66!!

Sounds like you have a good plan considering both rigs. You had better strap that top down...someone lost their top in Colorado while bringing their old cruiser home!!!

Looking forward to see more pics of the new ride when she gets home

Thanks!

Going to have a little delay in getting her home. The current owner had the title, but is wasn't in his name. The cruiser has been used as a farm vehicle since 1987 and the last two owners never worried about getting the title in their name. Not a problem if you don't intend to register it.

Since I intend on driving it for a little while, I tried to track down the owner from '87. Fortunately the PO had a unique name and I was able to contact him on the first phone call! Turns out that he lives about 1.5hrs from me. He remembered the cruiser well and said he'd meet up with me to get the title signed over. Hopefully I can hook up with him this Saturday. Will be nice to talk to him and get some more history on the old girl....

Hi.

I'm located near Gettysburg PA. The cruiser I recently acquired was located in New Midway, MD (About 20 mi from me). In the pictures, the cruiser looks pretty good. But it has the typical rust for this area. The tub is totally shot. There might be a piece here or there that I can use to re-build my '64 tub, but most people wouldnt even consider trying to re-build it. One of the PO's patched the body up with a mixture of rivited sheet metal, bondo, and fiberglass. There is even an old license plate that is covering a hole under the tool box.

I bought the cruiser to get the factory front fenders (which are in surprisingly good condition), bi-fold door parts, and the corrugated hard top sides. I might also use the wheels. Thought about using the hub caps, but i'm not sure they are any better than the ones i have....

Now that I have two early 40's, I might consider putting an aluminum tub on one, while I rebuild the other.

Dean, I'll have to let you know on the wheels and caps. For now, I'm going to keep them, until I decide exactly what I'm doing. Of course the caps would be much easier to ship, but they aren't in that good of shape--the fronts have rusted through areas and the rears have a lot of dings in them. I can post some pics from them when I get the cruiser home. Maybe I should start a new thread for that?

cjltlc, sounds like you have a couple of good projects going. Wish I was in a better position to help you on your wife's cruiser, but I barely have time to work on my own junk. I probably don't have the skill that you need either. I'm decent with the mechanicals (however, I'm far from an actual mechanic) and a rookie when it comes to body work (i'm currently enrolled in auto body classes). When you get around to restoring that early top, you may want to consider getting the horizontal seals from me (that is, once I receive them from the extruder!).

I purchased https://forum.ih8mud.com/fj25-classifieds-corner/256627-1961-fj40-fst-sale-nc.html and I have a second 1961 with a better tub plan on restoring one, rebuilding the other. But I have my FJ25 for trade to someone who would finish my wife's 40 before she gets back from Iraq. I have a bi-fold top for that, but it gets a soft top for now.

So you got Bills Cruiser...he sure did some great work!!!

You going to post up any pictures anytime soon?

No worries on the caps and stuff. I already have a few, just asking if you are no going to use them...besides...always a good idea to keep an eye out for potential parts for my '64 ;)

The sample is finally here. Found it at my front door when I got home tonight. Couldn't wait to test fit and take some pics.

I'm happy with how the sample turned out. The rubber feels as dense as the original. It also feels slightly stiffer. The sidewalls are a little thicker which may account for the stiffer feel. The sample is slightly shorter overall, but as you can see in the pictures, it fits well.

Based on how this fits on my door, I'm ready to give the go ahead on the production run. Get back to me with any comments/questions and I'll make sure to address them before ordering for everyone.

One note: I originally figured on 25' per order. After measuring again tonight, that number should be 30'. So, I'll send 30' per order at the price I quoted for 25'. This will come in two 15' pieces--enough for two doors.

If you are interested and haven't given me your order, please do so ASAP!

Thanks

Jason

Hey Jason, that looks pretty good to me...thanks for taking this project on

Will you be ordering extra?

How about those real bug catcher window rubbers...you game to take those on also?

Thanks Dean.

Based on the interest expressed in this thread so far, I will have some leftover after the first group of orders go out. Since this door is relatively rare, I don't anticipate that the extra will sell off very quickly. But you never know.

If these bi-fold seals work out well, maybe I could try to get some other rubber parts made (like the bug catcher seals).
