I have to replace my pinion bearing and while that was out I plan to regear my rear and frontend. What is the best gearing for 31 inch tires I have 4.10 now. Let me know what you think. I was leaning towards 4.56...

4.10's are fine, but you could go to 4.56's and still be good, give you a little bit more giddy-up, if you can imagine that with the 22RE. I have 4.88's now with 33's, they are perfect, speedo is dead-on.

31" tires were offered from the factory with 4.56 gears (and 4.88 with autos). If you have a u-pull I would go hunting there.

That was my original intention was for more giddy up... I thought the just the pinion seal was out but had it on the rack today and found that the pinion bearing is ^*#$ed I was planning on putting that money into my motor like header and exhaust but since my pinion bearing is out Ill be in there any way why not spend that extra money on gears. I think it would be better to spend the money on gears then the motor, now anyway.

If you are going to regear and stay with 31" tires then go to 4.56. I have that combo and the speedo is more or less dead on.

I have the thirds out of my 4Runner and they are in excellent shape. The front third looks like it was almost never used (which it wasn't as it was rarely put into 4WD. I was thinking about offering them for sale but just haven't fooled with it. They are the original 4.10 ratio.

OK, I am going to be the contrary one.

Why would you even regear a 22re with 31's? A little more pep....I don't see that much. The value proposition of doing that versus other work seems off.

I would think you would want to get another third from somewhere (hell, they give them away here at the clubs) and put your money in your engine.

Now, I am also a believer of not doing anything to a 22re...2.4 is 2.4 ( : But if you must, then recam it or header it.

If you want 33's then regear in my opinion. I run 31's on my 22re, stock gearing and they are fine.

Just my .02

I agree on lots of points made here. Good stuff.

My take is.

How much 0n-road driving do you do? Is mpg important to you? And just why do you have to have those 31's? For the money I'd go back to stock, pick up some MPGs and get me a TRD diff.

If you must have 31's get some aluminum wheels. (I'd have a hard time convincing myself to re-gear for 31's)

When gearing, there is usually two sets that are so very close to being what you need. Only, you can't have two gear sets, so you must pick one.

If you need to pull, need the 31's and use the truck a lot. I'd say get the lowest gear of the two.

If you're a flat-lander, don't use the truck a lot for pulling. I'd deal w/ the lug, and do like you said and hop up the engine some. That might net you some more mpgs, and make turning those meats more tolerable with the power you just picked up.

Tell ya what.... I am running 35's with 4:88's and I hit 5th gear at 40 miles an hour(assuming my speedo is right).I drive around town in 3 or 4 gear.....some where around 15 miles an hour I hit 3rd.

If you stay with 31 inch tires......4:56 will be plenty.:D

I also would not have regeared except I wanted TRD elockers and they come in 4.10, 4.30 or 4.56. I run 31" tires and put in the 4.56 elockers. It did make a difference but not enough that I would have regeared my open diffs.

Alright then it sounds like I am going back to my original idea... Money into the motor. The original reason I thought to regear is my pinion bearing is out and figured why not put the extra money there since I will have everything opened up anyway. I guess then I will be spending some money on a header or cam...

Also I already have alu wheels, just bought the 31 inch tires and spend quite some time offroad. I would love to put a locker in the rear end but not sure if it would be more problems then help since I am in ND and lots of the driving I do is on the freeway in the snow and ice. I rarely have my truck in four wheel drive while on the road...

Thanks for all your input

well maybe just me, toy motors will handle 4 grand all day in and out.
I would just go with the locker and 5.29 gears. you will go with bigger tires later, you will make it your wheeler not dd later. so go with what you will be using rather then doing it all again later down the road.
wheeling is an addiction. you always want more.
do it now and do it once.

Neck breaking acceleration!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok let me throw one out there for yall. I have just gotten rid of my 97 80 series with 35's and 4.88 gears and that was perfect. I also had a 84 runner with a slightly built 22r, 5 speed and ran 5.29's with 35's and it was great. I now am looking at a freinds 91 4runner with 33's and 5.29's with the 3.0 and automatic. I'm assuming that since everyone says the 3.0 is such a pig especially with the automatic that the 33's and 5.29's will be an ok combo. I realize it is a little overgeared but I drive 85% in town and very little hwy. Thoughts?? Anyone running this combo??

nope sorry, it's not over geared. For a MT yes it would be. But for an AT (+ the 3.0h) no.

Most AT's, both foreign and domestic have lower gears in them.

should make a sweet combo...

I could be wrong but it could be 4:30's with the auto

4:30s, 4:56's and 4:87's are kinda common. But you're hitting on the point. Base your gears off what it came with, not off the general calculator.

Going over or under what it came from factory is preference though. If you want it to feel just like it did with the original tires on it, you should start at what it came with then go up on the chart.

And OP, some 34's will bring a little of that over gear down :grinpimp:

(j/k they're only bias ply and you'd definitely loose some longevity and streetability)

I had a 91 with 4.88's and 33's and it was perfect. I had 31's on the same truck with stock gears and it was a little sluggish, but not terrible. 4.56's would be my vote but for 31's I would probably just do a header and open up the intake a little. On a seperate topic that was brought up in this thread I recall when I regeared my 86 4runner back in the day that the rear gear set was 4runner specific. I think the 3rd housing was slightly shallower and it had a shorter pinion gear. I could be wrong, but I know the stock 4.10 set from my rear wouldn't fit my friends 88 pickup 3rd member and I recall that being the reason.
