I think he's thinking of the factory 4:87 carriers that can't be re-geared...

I bought a 4.10 3rd member from an 84 toyota rear, and the rear ends are interchangeable however the pinion shaft and bearing are completely different. I had my 89 and the 84 3rd member that I spent money on out and the rebuild kit was not compatible with the 84 rear end because the pinion was different.

yeah I just thought I would get the thought out, thing that sucked was when taking apart the purchased 84 third member we found that the ring gear was warped and they were not the correct parts but dealing with this @$$shole here in Grand forks he bull**** and wouldn't take it back. What ever I now have a 3rd member with a warped ring gear and not much I can do with it but sell it and take the hit on what I originally bought it for. I can't stand these guys up here they are assholes! Any one want a 3rd member you name a price and I'll ship it to you, its just sitting in my garage, worthless.

The issue is not any more, I ended up using my 3rd member to rebuild my rear end with the aussie locker, after we found the parts to not fit. The thing that sucks is I felt weary about doing business with these guys in the first place now I am out too much money and have no gain.

Seriously anyone want a 3rd member to rebuild.

make a turn crank lazy susan for your kitchen with it!

Sorry if there is any confusion this was an old thread that I wanted rant my aggression on the difference between the 84 3rd and 89 3rd member. I am ditching the 31's now for 35's.

well maybe just me, toy motors will handle 4 grand all day in and out.
I would just go with the locker and 5.29 gears. you will go with bigger tires later, you will make it your wheeler not dd later. so go with what you will be using rather then doing it all again later down the road.
wheeling is an addiction. you always want more.
do it now and do it once.

It's an addiction... Go all the way. Only do it once.:hillbilly:

Yah, agree with the addiction, I have always had it just lacked the funds, different story, now little money, few responsibilities the one being my truck, and thats where the every extra little pennie goes!

also, factory 4.88 3rd members have a different pinion bore offset and cannot be re-geared.

84 had what's known as the "4 cylinder" gears in it, after 86 (I think) all diffs 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder used the same "V6" gear sets. That is probably what's causing the issues...
