So hide the phone somewhere in the vehicle, but keep it plugged in to vehicle power. Anything other issues to consider? If it's mostly shielded by sheet metal (e.g., somewhere in a rear quarter panel) that must affect cell reception, yes? Also, set the phone to vibrate so there's no audible alert when you do Find My iPhone. Anything else?

The sheet metal doesn't seem to affect anything, being under concrete in a parking garage has the greatest negative affect. I keep it on "do not disturb" because you do not want the vibration or ring tones giving anything away. Make sure you have the "Find my Phone" app all setup and ready to go and that its part of your itunes network so that your personal cell phone sees it fine. Even if power is cut out, because there is nothing else running on the phone, the battery will last about 4 days. But the phone needs to be on, just asleep. If its off, then its as useful as a lug nut key that doesn't fit your wheels.
