So I got this rear diff interstate because I need the later 4 bolt pattern and despite it being wrapped in bubble wrap the transport monkeys have wrecked it.

I can't tell what the picture is showing. Pinion seal on a 3rd? Axle housing dust shield?
 
This is what I would try; Remove seal and carefully get a hub nut to engage. Using a round wooden dowel of about 1/3 the inner diameter, insert dowel and use a hammer on the side of the dowel to restore the shape.

It's probably just the out edge that is dented.
 
I might see if I can get some round brass and do it. Just worried about the seal being affected after. Idea of using the nut is a good one thanks!
 
Seal needs to be replaced anyway. To me, the key is to go slow and careful. I like wood to start because it definitely won't hurt metal. Brass is a good choice too.
