Onur, I and a few others were discussing this earlier this week while losing some keys, and Toyota is getting pretty darn sophisticated in checking that you have the vehicle it's intended for. And licensed and registered, apparently. At least in the US, it's FAR more complicated than telling them what it goes to (oh, they know what it goes to)....

Jerks! I'm trying to give them money!

Dan

To solve this problem I may just have to take a vacation with a couple empty duffle bags. I wonder if there is someone I could contact and explain what the deal is. I own my engine, which came into the US legally, so I want to be able to run it with OEM parts. One way or another I'll get it done.

I have started stripping down the forty. The front clip is off along with most the inside. Luckily, no snapped bolts yet, just some stubborn screws. Taking lots of pictures along the way, plus labeling the wiring harness that will be loosing a lot of weight when it gets rebuilt.

Next plan of action after pulling the drivetrain is rebuilding both axles. Both axles will get sent out for blasting and then receive paint, rebuilds and brake upgrades. From there I will do power steering, and then rebuild my splitcase.

Thats it for now, and of course pictures.

Bracket

Almost to the day 2 years ago,I brought the forty home and now it is tucked away in a garage once again. I took it for its last drive last night and started taking it apart. My front doors, dash, and all the lights are bagged, tagged, photographed and boxed.

I am thinking this Saturday I will pull my engine and start parting out the drivetrain.

Just some ideas that have been floating around in my mind is using a FJ62 radiator because it has the lines for the tranny cooler, but use those for a PS cooler, and that will make life easier in that area. Need to check that the outlets line up, but I think they do for a 1HZ. Also planning on FJ80 brake booster and master because I plan on upgrading to rear disk. Also I have read in the 80 section about using an alternator out of a Tundra or Sequoia thats either 130 or 150 amps that bolts up pretty close to stock on a 1FZ, and a 1HZ shares some design features with a 1FZ so I plan on exploring that.

Thats it for now.

Re: the alternator from a Sequoia/Tundra the reason why I am still interested is in the amp output if you run a lot of electronic gear , lights, radios, etc. I'm still following that thread but the hang up seems to be if Bill's bracket will fit the 1HZ. If you find a way to do it I'm interested in one too.

I did the 80 series non ABS brake booster and MC and like it.

Re: rad if you find a way to make a 4 core brass rad with an integrated tranny or PS cooler, I'm up for that as well.

BTW, Looks good.

Been doing some research into the radiator issue. It appears that I might be able to get a radiator out of a Gen 2 4Runner to work out size wise and it has the transmission cooler lines as well from what I have read. Going to a junkyard tomorrow to get some final measurements and take a look at other Toyotas in the yard and see if something else works. This could be a sweet drop in or close to replacement for forty series and for people wanting a PS cooler.

Also on the Sequoia alternator, the bracket everyone refers to mounts on the other side of a 1FZ. So, it looks like some custom brackets working will be in the future of this engine. This might also be good for the York compressor thats mounted above it.

Update: I have been working on getting the old 2F ready to pull. All my wiring harness is out! It was in pretty good condition. Couple wires I need to figure out. Plus the interior has been stripped and the front clip 100% removed.

I have some parts figured out for the 1HZ that should make it complete along with a couple spares.

In the long run I planned on turboing my 1HZ and it has been suggested I do it all before I drop in the 1HZ. I like that idea, so I started looking into kits. I came across this and wanted to know what other people thought of it. I like that it uses all new Toyota parts, but I am still new to the turbo charging world, so I am a little unsure of it. The kit seems like a nice way of not having to worry about making sure I have all the parts.

looks alright
i will be installing the kit sold by Radd Cruisers in the next week or so on the 1HZ troopy build if you want to wait for a feed back.
up to you, John will be decent to deal with.

That would be great. I am curious how their kit is similar, and what you think of it.

What turbo did you run on the 1HZ in the 78 forty?

i ran a full custom setup, a mapped turbo with adapter to factory manifold with mapped intercooler ... not cheap but works like a damn.
i will be doing another one on my red ragtop this summer, not that i need it but more of a want.

Senor Mojo:

If you want, we can take a look/measure my turboglide kit.

Just looking at it, it's not rocket science, the hardest part is the turbo exhaust manifold and getting the air from there to the intake. The rest of it you can easily source locally from Central Motive Power (probably not a bad idea to get to know them anyhow, they are the Denso Injection shop around these parts, and the Garret/AirResearch dealer too).

Well, Bad Mojo needed a bit more help in securing parts, so CDan decided to hire him at American Toyota.

Here he is at his first day on the job:

Do those birfs with ABS rings come with cupholders too?

Did you try to hang him with a V-belt?
:hillbilly:

We'll see you guys in a bit, Dad and I are on our way into town.... If you want to set aside a 90105-11H00.....

This project has not fallen to the wayside, so here is a much needed update. There is a long discussion about a parking brake in my normal build up thread in my chapter section. Looked at mounting up FJ Cruiser rear brakes to gain a parking brake. Looks like more work than needed. Waiting on more information on TSM. When money allows I could see going to a rear 70 series FF with disk. For now hopefully TSM transfer case parking brake with Poser's rear disk on the back axle.

I pulled out my old drivetrain (2F) today with the help of a local club member. It is very much the point of no return. I have sourced in the rest of the parts needed for my 1HZ to be complete, and hopefully should have a 1HZ spec H55 by the end of the summer, with a rebuilt split case in a couple weeks.

Have some clean up work to do on the body and frame. Need to figure out the 1HZ placement. Suggestions are welcome.

interested to watch the progress...

It should be a pretty fun project with some cool upgrades and features along the way.

Do you have any advice on mounting the 1HZ into the forty? In your thread you made it seem like it was a snug fit. I am thinking I want to have everything (H55 split case etc) bolted together before I try to test and weld in motor mounts.

yep, engine, tranny, t/case assembled as one with all the accessories installed.
if you are running the 70 series H55F then your shifter will come through the floor about 3" further back from the factory shifter hole in the floor.
the engine sits SLIGHTLY cock-eyed to the left from center at the front.
the engine also sits SLIGHTLY on a tilt with engine high and tranny low.

Great information thanks. I will be running a 70 series H55.

It looks like I need to make the brackets for some accessories that go on the block. (150 amp Sequoia alternator, York air compressor)

Quick update:

Splitcase all cleaned up and ready to go back in after a rebuild. Going to try to adjust my speedo at the same time I install it.

New 1HZ parts coming in the next couple days. Last bits to finish out the engine. I forgot mine didn't come with a fan.

The last item, I have a chance to get a new HZJ75 radiator and want to know its dimensions to see if it will even fit into a forty.

actually, i have a brand new one on the shelf, i will measure for you tomorrow. you will need custom bracketry...

Sounds good thanks. I am curious if they are much bigger in size.
