To start off this is going to be a slow build, mostly because I only have 4 months off from school each year and they aren't stacked up together. But I have a month long break coming up in about 2 weeks. That break will be spent gathering more information on parts and where to track them down. Luckily, a very big piece showed up last week. I was able to score a complete 1HZ minus the PS pump.

During break I will get it set up in a cradle so I can move it around, get it all cleaned up, painted, and bolt up new parts as they come in. Also during the break I am chasing electrical issues that are causing a short, because I don't want to be chasing those after the diesel swap. The last item over break would be swapping in power steering from a 60 series.

I also will be asking questions along the way because I have just got comfortable with my 2F. The reason for pulling my 2F is because it is showing some wear and tear. Its loosing compression across the board and I wanted to pick up something with more gas efficient because my 40 is my DD to and from school and it something else to learn.

Also during the swap I will be putting a brand new H55 and splitcase, but those are must with the swap. Also I will be upgrading to 60 series drive shafts, and putting in a 22 gal aux tank. I am going to try to use as many OEM parts as possible unless it is unavailable or a better aftermarket part. I am going to try and mock everything up before I swap everything in. I am thinking I am going to try and swap it over summer break.

The first question is I am thinking perhaps an 80 series PS pump would work for my 1HZ because they are driven in the same fashion, but I would like to confirm that before picking one up.

A picture of where the new engine is going.

Dude,
This sounds a lot like my build but done a more skilled, thoughtful guy. Anyway welcome to what is still apparently a very small club of 40 owners who have swapped in either a 1HZ or a 1HD-T. Just a thought, while you have your engine on the stand think about turboing it. I just turboed mine (still in the shop so no test run yet) and the reports from the guys in the 70 series section are it really wakes up the engine. My second thought is if you decide to turbo consider intercooling the engine, PWR, Denco (same equipment and company just different brand name) and frozenboost all have air to water barrell kits. I found that the 4X10 barell fits nicely on top of the 1HZ after it is in the 40. In fact I think that there is enough room to upgrade down the road to the 6x10 barrel. Regarding the intercooler barrel, I have mine sitting on top of the crossover tube. It could easily sit behind the tube as well. In another thread I was talking to another mudder who got me to consider removing the stock crossover tube entirely and using the intercooler barrel as my air intake tube. While I am too pressed for time and into my build at this point to go that route i will probably do this in about a year after I get back to the States as it will greatly simplfy the air intake plumbing. Just a couple of thoughts. Good luck:cheers:

My 1hz was imported with a 70 series PS pump. It attached right to the 60 series PS steering box that I run no sweat. Check the part numbers for both the hzj75 and the hdj81. I'll bet that they are the same and there is a good likelihood that they are the same pump.

Long term I would love to turbo it, but I don't know if I could swing that cost up front. I plan after my drivetrain is payed off to save up for a turbo and intercooler, and some other fun pieces for the forty.

I have been following your build thread and Crushers for a while now and was curious of how you are running a H41 behind your 1HZ I thought you had to go to a H55? Some clarification would be great. I plan on going to a H55, but if I could mate to my H42 over winter break I would highly consider it.

Sounds good on the PS pump. I was going to check part numbers, but also check against a FZJ80. Finding part numbers has been interesting for this build.

parts

on my post about the 1hdt swap into my 40 I list the parts youll need and some sources since the 1hz and 1hdt are pretty much the same cept the 1hdt is turbo
https://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tec...55-into-fj40-some-questions-some-answers.html

the 1hz is going to be fine spline (afaik) and whichever gearbox you use I am guessing you will need the input shaft changed (coarse vs fine spline shaft)

PM me if you want specifics like what parts, part numbers, prices I got, and what shipping charges are like from OZ for the parts to mate the h55 and 1hz

glad to see another one being done

I learned most of what I needed from the posts you mentioned and a few others so I am not the expert ---they are, but I have gathered some info together

Sweet, you got a dedicated thread here, where all the cool kids play.

Fixed it for you. Gas will be a thing of the past, buddy. You'll be on the lookout for the green signs at gas stations, and realize how annoying it is when people fill their gasoline powered vehicles at the only diesel pumps at the station...

You know I never did ask, you are back in the States, where did you score the HZ engine from?

I got mine from a guy selling them here on MUD; he had gotten them from a mine that was swapping in Cummins. They came out of the Northwest part of the country.

I think that I remember hearing about those engines coming up for sale. Nice snag. It is good to know that these can be obtained back in the states. I have a couple of other projects in mind and after going through this build I have learned a lot of lessons about this setup which I plan to apply to future projects.. Again nice snag on the engine.

I am waiting to see if my bid on a damaged 70 is approved. If so I will have a spare HZ.

Thanks I was glad to have gotten it in the US and from someone who understood cruisers. They seem to pop up about six months or so, but you got to on them. I had contacted the owner within 20 minutes of him posting. I also know some of the larger cruiser shops are always looking for them too.

I reviewed your build thread, but don't understand how you are running a H41 behind your 1HZ. If it is possible I would consider trying to get my H42 to run it for now, but your the only person I have seen run it with a 4 speed.

Nice! But isn't that the best part of a 70 series? Or are you looking for parts. Best of luck with it.

I am wondering too, the reason I can mate a h55 to a 1hdt is that the 70 series came with this combo so I can swap a 70 fine spline input shaft to my coarse spline h55 that came out of a 2H hj60
also using the bell housing to mate the eng and tranny

Gentlemen,
Sorry if my build thread was vague on this point, Thanks. I need to go back and clean it up a bit and add pictures, etc. This is how it went step by step:

1) Got the 1HZ mated to an H150 which was too long for my SWB 40 without cutting and moving the cross member.

2) Sold the H150 and went looking for an H55

3) Got the bellhousing to mount the 1HZ to a H55

4) Tried but failed to find an H55 and decided to stay with my stock H41

5) **Picked up a clutch for the 1HZ**

6) **Took said 1HZ clutch to a clutch specialist shop here**

7) **Clutch specialist used the 1HZ clutch as a base and made me a custom clutch which could take my coarse spline H41 input shaft**

8)**Installed my custom clutch and drove my newly 1HZ laden 40 to work** :grinpimp:

Reference posts 319,323,324,330 and updated summary post 345 of my build thread for the detailed discussion.

The critical piece of the story missing here is custom clutch. Otherwise there is no way that the coarse spline H41 input shaft would fit the fine spline 1HZ. Again my plan was to get the H55 but when that fell through there was no choice but to go with a custom clutch as my 40 is my DD. As soon as I find an H55 I´ll go with either the 1HZ clutch or the supposedly stronger than OEM Centerforce set up. Let m know if I can help you guys in any way. I am following both of your builds, while I finish mine.

Got it now!

GOT IT! It was nagging me since I thought I had read that custom clutch thing somewhere

so does that mean the 41 will actually bolt up to a 1hz or 1hdt bell housing?

Yes, to a 1HZ bellhousing

Okay that makes much more sense. I think I am going to just stick with going straight to the H55 because I can get a brand new one and get all the parts from Toyota. It will be fun once I have the completed list of parts going over to see CDan and Onur and place that order.

Also worked out the design for the cradle for the drive train tonight. I designed it so I just have to lift the frame a bit and then slide the entire combo underneath it and then it has a set of jacks to lift it up front and rear so I can adjust it that way. It is also designed, so that it can have different engines placed in it. This will also be my first welding project, which I am excited for.

Thanks to everyone on their input.

Going with the H55 was my plan too. The problem is that new ones aren´t realistically available here and used ones are scarce.

Are you unable to order one up through the dealership? I am pretty sure I found the P/N for a H55 specified for a 1HZ, or you just swap out the shafts. Or on your next visit to the U.S. pick one and have it shipped down. Or does shipping get hairy moving something that big and heavy?

I was looking at the motor mounts on my engine and I understand the front two, so is the next one that bolts up under the H55 and looks like this?

I am debating getting a 60 series cross member and giving it the chop, or should I just go custom? Input please. Thanks.

Do you have a link for where you found this mount? I´d have to look closer at the bolt pattern.
