Nothing much getting done on my 40 lately, just enjoying it. I've noticed a new vibration that is more than likely due to the extended shackles, not a surprise. I was actually expecting that.

Been fishing a few times in the last couple of weeks, it would be nice to install a Rod Vault on the top but I'm not sure how far out front it would stick out.

I guess if it wouldn't work I could install it on my Tahoe.

Anyone else have good solutions for rod storage in a 40? Other than breaking it down and stuffing it back in the rod tube.

With your finely tuned welding skills, you could rig a rod vault up yourself! Or just put it on your list for Santa. Either way, I’m guessing you are about to have a few months before you need it again...

That is my method sometimes when jumping from spot to spot, but I'm always worried about breaking a tip, or worse. Ideally I would like something that I could leave my rods in for longer periods. As much as I drive over the river here, it would be nice to leave a rod rigged and ready, that way I could make a few quick pitstops on the way home. Also be able to leave rods rigged while stopping at watering holes and such.

I always use a pair of these, hole-to-hole... unless I’m worried about human-proof security... then, I break them down and lock them up.

These are strong magnets... I’ve never had one come loose, even on the roughest roads and trails... and they’re great for their true use (while rigging up), preventing damage from closing a door on your rod, etc.

I do add a failsafe, by tethering the rod butt to my vehicle, with a ball-bungee or nite ize.

Edit: I’ve never had reproductive harm, but I don’t live in CA any more

@Solace in Solitude I was thinking of one of these just to bounce around the backroads and from spot to spot. It’s nothing that I would leave unattended at the watering hole but plenty sufficient for driving around.

This model has one magnetic base and one vacuum base(for the hardtop)

In the long run I think the Rod Vault is the best solution.

But first I need to get a roof rack to mount on top of the 40!

I saw that setup... it looks quite stable.

The rod vault is definitely the way to go... then you can leave your rods geared up for those quick stops at the fish market, on the way home.

You need a rack, only if you want a rack.. I think it would be really easy to rig up a rod vault mount that securely mounts under the roof gutter on one side... or, as a pair of crossbars... to both sides.

But, it’s “easy” ‘cuz I ain’t gotta do it.

I saw a 40 series in Ketchum, ID with the rod vault that you show a picture of. It looked to fit quite well for 9’ rods. Have you considered using the brush guard to help transport your fly rods? I look at your rig and that’s one of the first things that comes to mind. I’m curious what you come up with, so keep us all posted.

Nothing to really post about lately, at least regarding my 40.

Been busy with Christmas stuff, new dog, still working on getting our house situated, and working for the man.

I'm hoping to get some tool time on the windshield wipers this weekend, I may even get crazy and put the old seats back in it for a while, if I fab up some brackets to move the drivers seat back to a comfortable location.

Right now the only thing the 40 is doing is hiding a liter of Baileys Irish cream. It's a present for my wife, we usually have one through the holidays to spike the coffee with!

I'll probably revisit the rod issue later in the spring or early summer. (Unless my wife scored a rod vault for me) I have used a bungee cord to hold rods to the front grill in the past, I'm not too much of a fan of that method. $700-800 fly rods make me nervous.

I noticed a few weeks ago that I’m only pulling about 12-14 inches of vacuum on the engine at idle. I believe that is a little low, especially for a freshly rebuilt engine, I’m going to recheck the timing, check the valves, and tune the carb up a little.


Hopefully I get some free time.

That's a little on the low side, but remember that you'll get less at altitude anyway.
