honestly you don't even need to buy self tappers, theyre kinda pricey these days, I just used drywall screws, should do the trick.... I guess were not going to see pictures of you polishing your shaft now

The input bearing on the t case, the one that the output shaft of the tranny rides on.

Seems like it may have spun at some point over the last half-a-hundred years.

Chatted with tech support from @cruiseroutfit for a while regarding this. Came up with a solid plan B.

Trimmed the remaining parts of the shims off.

I would have taken a good automatic center punch to the exterior of that bearing and done a strike every 1/4" or so around the circumference in even number total (keeps it centered) in like 5 or 6 concentric rows then used that "juice" for added grip besides the little points created by the sharp center punch as I pounded thee bearing in.

That was discussed with tech help also.

In the end I decided to go with an extra .004 of shim stock and the retaining compound.


The path of least resistance first.
 
That looks like a super well-executed job!

I'm curious, how did you cut off the excess shim stock so cleanly?
Being as that shim stock was only .001" I just used a fresh razor blade and sliced it as deep into the space as I could get it.
 
Still going the wrong way.
