Actually, for an EFI rig and the restriction numbers that we are talking about, the MPG change is zero or very close to it and the HP loss is very small, likely not detectable to the driver, even at 25in/h2o.

IIRC isn't there an air filter warning light in the dash cluster. If so, has anyone tried wiring one of the electronic versions of the filter minder to it?

here is where I have mine ...

It looks like you used the grommet style - I presume no problems? Drill a hole, insert grommet, insert filter minder, done?

The 80 series does have an air filter warning light, and i've seen it on.

The USA version doesn't have one.

yup that simple .. 1/4  job .. I just make sure it was pretty tight fit ..

Found it. I knew I saw something about the air filter warning light in the dash cluster. :p

For those so enthused, and who must forever tinker, you can purchase the electric contact version from Filter Minder and wire it to the dash light, or better yet, get the OEM Toyota one (ref post 6 in the link below)

And the factory switch trips at somewhere below 15.5 inches H2O according to that thread... Very cool, wonder if the US trucks have the appropriate wiring harness? Hmmmm...

Good info Kevin, thanks for the writeup!

As a FYI, you can pick up a package of five or six of the Minders from Ebay for pretty cheap. What you don't use, you can sell it to someone else. I've put these on all of my vehicles since we live on a dirt road.

jst picked up one from amazon.. tnkS

I would love to find a Donaldson element that would drop in the Toyota housing. I have an AIS system on my Super Duty and it has over 60,000 miles on it with no drop in efficiency.

Ahh, so it doesn't have the sensor, all 80 series here have them installed, i've only seen it on on an older carbed 80 which had been beat to death.

Thanks for the info!

I work on semis and see filters go over 250K miles and the gage is only half way to restricted.
Most of those filters can go for $200 a pop so they don't get changed till necessary.

We had one garbage truck that came in on the hook, it just stopped running they said.
It was found that the filter had become so clogged that it formed a perfect vacuum and the filter imploded.
From the looks of it it was months ago and the rig had been sucking unfiltered air through a gaping hole in the filter. Actually it was a large vacuum and sucked everything in and ran it through the turbo.
The engine was completely destroyed as a result.

You can get those restriction gauges at nearly any truck shop in just about any flavor.

The only concern I have about the filter minder is whether or not the indicator remains at the highest point of indication reached until reset.

What I'm getting at is.... since an engine draws in more cfm as rpms are increased will it give you a false reading at idle starving the engine of intake while at higher rpms with a filter that is presumably nearing need of replacement/cleaning, but still permissible according to the indicator?

Given that the domestic trucks been using them for years, I think we're good to go :D
