@Mace intrigued me to look into my fuel gauge and mileage. My mileage this morning was 197.5 and below full but above a 3/4 tank. Getting home tonight I had 214.5 on the odometer and it was about 3/4 full. I believe I have the stock tank.
Every vehicle I’ve had gauges they all seam to sudden drop really near empty fast. Getting home is shows 3/4 on the fuel gauge. I decided I need to investigate. I’ve worked on the 60 so much that I have not ran a full tank through it. I’ve filled with diesel cans and also fillips. Not until I’ve had the Speedhut could I get any solid gpm. Tonight I decided to check.

Pulled the fuel float.

Got a clean piece of wood and marked it with inch marks and put it into bottom of tank.

Bottom to top gasket for float is 8”. My current fuel level is 5”, 3” down from the top.

I’m not entirely sure how full the tank gets when you fill it at the pump but I’ve done 214.5 miles in 3” of fuel in the tank if it gets completely full. There’s still 5” of diesel to bottom of tank. Because it’s diesel I’m not going let it run too low, but this test shows the 4BT is really putting out the mpg’s. 4:10s on 37s. I know cruising down the highway it literally feels like it’s barely working the engine. 5th gear is runs like a dream. Highest I’ve driven is 74mph on I-84 Labor Day in the Columbia River Gorge.

The fuel float is rusty and should be replaced. After these findings I’m convinced the fuel level is working properly. More input from other would be appreciated. With the 2F I would be needing to refuel tomorrow!
@boots4 @GLTHFJ60 @The Phoenician also have 4BTs in their 60 series

Im assuming that +200 miles was starting with a full tank? I think you used more then a 1/4 tank, otherwise that would be 40-45mpg. These tanks are 23 gallons by the way. Your sender might be bad? How is the fuel level calibrated with the Speedhut gauges? Might be a discrepancy there.

Tank 8” deep
Fuel 5” deep
Mileage 214.5
My Speedhut speedometer is on for mileage to a tee. It’s 17 miles to my work.
I loose almost 1500’ in elevation the highway, climb 600’ up the work. Reverse that order on way home. This is NOT all flat land driving.

To make it easier we’ll do 215 miles in 3” of fuel if the tank is totally filled to top, no air gap. That’s 71.7 miles per inch of diesel in the tank. Tank is 8” deep x 71.7 miles per inch = 573.6 miles roughly.
573.6 total miles divided by 23 gallons= 24.939 mpg.

@cruiseroutfit do you have a FJ60 fuel level sending unit?

The Speedhut fuel gauge does work with the sender. Here it is with a half tank.

The one in the fuel tank is just rusted and the arm isn’t looking too good either. Don’t want it to rot off and have a float bobbing in the tank.

You are getting mileage that I've never experienced myself. The highest I've seen was 21mpg but I usually average in the high teens and our setups are not that similar. But when doing the math ~24mpg is doable on the 4bt. There are others that have achieved better albeit not in a lifted vehicle. At this point it seems like you've got a great mileage tune and it'll be interesting to see where it's at after a couple of tanks. 1 tank of fuel is never the average. I hope it stays high for you.

What speeds do you average on your commute to work?

55-65 on the highway. I push it on the 600’ hill climb up 232nd. It’s steep prolly a 6-7% grade.

Pretty sure the tank has a depression where the sending unit goes, so the lower 3" is a lot smaller volume-wise than the upper 3".

Only way to know for sure is to fill it up, drive it, fill it up again and check mileage vs fuel used. Do that 3-4 times and average it out - then you know.

Slightly similar situation. 13BT. h55f,

I drive basically flat land, 12 miles to work, rural and 60ish mph. I'm averaging 20ish mpg and the first half of the tank I get a bunch of miles out of, especially before it comes off full. I get up to 350up to 400kms on the first half, usually 200~250kms second half. At empty I still have 3.5+ gallons of fuel.

I should probably mess with the sender, bend the arm to get it more accurate...but I have plenty of other things to mess with. And either my factory odometer/speedometer is way off from stock, or someone replaced the speedo gear at some point, because with 33.75" tires (255/85r16's) I'm within .06 ~.10 kilometers off of GPS.

Those gauges are sweet.
