Month and date are early to do find from 1964 on. As far as I know the one SOR posted years ago is the original that all other are based on. It's linked in the 45 section in the sticky tracking the lwb trucks. The VIN for early month is for the 1st.

@timmyisinthewell do you happen to have any microfiche that cover pre 3/69. It would probably have changer dates for certain parts during 68-69. Beside tail lights, hood bumpers and hub cap there is driveshaft flanges, ball and claw to Birfield and inner axle axle shaft from coarse to fine spline. When I join mud I was really interested in the FJ25 and early FJ40s. I have microfiche covers these. Some how I ended up with two 1967 FJ55 microfiche. One covers only 67 while the other covers FJ55 from 1967 thru later years. Not sure if it follows thru 7/80. Since I do not have an FJ55 I haven't looked that close. A microfiche cover the FJ40 61 thru 3/69 would be a valuable tool dating pre 3/69 change dates.
Sorry, Living in the Past, but my microfiche set only covers the period from 03/69 to 07/80 for the FJ40 series and the FJ55 in the US and Canadian markets. I don't have any media on anything earlier, but I do agree with you that a microfiche set for the earlier 40's would be invaluable. Must be extremely frustrating to the earlier FJ40 owners trying to keep these old trucks running and driving in the absence of good documentation of parts and part numbers.

Believe it was around the time I joined mud (2005) eBay had tons of microfiche for cheap. At that time interest was mainly FJ25s and early FJ40, those I had covered.wish now would have bought a bunch. Particularly for 68/69. 66/67 not sure of changes but never owned either of those years.

Rebuilt the carb as a morale booster to get me going on this project.

Turns out I’m missing a choke breaker or opener or something. Anybody got these parts and want to sell them? Not 100% necessary, but I’d like it to be complete.

Here’s a photo from the manual showing all the parts except the small rod that links to the vac pot:

Also notice it’s set up for a throttle rod instead of a cable. I want to go back to the original cable. If anybody has that piece of the carb, as well as the other cable stuff (bell crank, guides?), I’d love to take it off your hands!

Jim #2 is the spring I was looking for!. no dice

I probably have some of that stuff laying around, I took mine off not too long ago. I think it's called a "Throttle Positioner" on this year carb (10/'73). I'm not sure if it even worked or exactly what it was supposed to do and it offended me as I like to think of my right foot as the throttle positioner. Plus, I think the fewer the vacuum lines, the better I like it.
I just went out in the rain to check my Carb Parts box, I do have some stuff

Awesome. Could definitely use the bolt that holds the bottom of the carb to the middle - I see one in there, maybe you’d part with it. It’s a hex bolt with a large slot for a flat blade screwdriver.

For the that “throttle positioned” or whatever it’s called, it’s this whole mess of parts pictured below, plus the small linkage rod that hooks to that vac pot. @RodrigzCrzr is also looking for the spring (#2) below:

He gets first dibs on the #2 spring though, he called me looking for one almost a year ago!

Bolt #4 is a round-head screw and I'll send you my spare. Also have two of the #5 arms but they're 2 different sizes. There are supposed to be two linkage rods coming off the diaphragm, I can only find one. I cannot find a spring #2 at all.

This is awesome. Looks like the more gray (less gold) arm is the one - seems to have more relief in the bend. If you’re willing to part with any of that stuff I’ll take it. If not the visual is very helpful.

Today was the day. I started.

Vacuumed first to get rid of hantavirus mouse nests, wasp hives, rust flakes, spiders, spider webs, and decades of dried eucalyptus leaves … it was sitting in California for a long time and they have Aussie trees out there. I didn’t touch the lichen, it stays.

Removed the seats. I snagged some nice seats with I think Cruiser Corp covers from @joesfj40 this summer. They probably won’t go in until everything else is done but they’re nice to look at for now. They’re gonna look weird with the “patina” on this truck but that’s fine.

Out with the old:

The first project I want to tackle - and that I started today - is pulling out the entire wiring harness. Every plastic connector and about half the wires crumble when you touch them. I already got all the connectors and pins I need from @Coolerman and I have the proper factory color coded wire on hand. I want to get the wire colors right so I can still use the wiring diagram to troubleshoot in the future. But first I need to extract the existing harness in as close to one piece as I can and string it up on a peg board so I can copy it with the new stuff.

A lot of time was spent today removing stuff in and around the dash for better access. All of it needs cleaned anyway: ductwork, heater core, knobs, etc. Then I got to pulling wires off, and baggin’ & taggin’.

I also started making lists.
IMG_4807.webp

Long way to go - full brake system overhaul, fuel pump rebuild, replace every hose, manifold job, replace the entire cooling system, drill out every snapped hard top bolt, rivet the roof cap, install a windshield, etc. I’ll keep pushing on the electrical stuff over the next few weeks and see how far I get. Everything else seems like weekend jobs. Feels good to have just a little progress under my belt though.

How to eat an elephant as they say on here. You got this!
Elephant … horns? Delicious!

No, but you’re right. One bite at a time.

Harness is out.

15 text messages to @RodrigzCrzr asking “what’s this thing?, 4 broken screws, 2 broken bolts, and about 12 hours of work. Not bad.

Any advice on crimping new cables & housing onto the backs of the vent & choke knobs? I think there was a third one that needed a redo too, but I forget which.

Harness pegged, labeled, and wire colors assigned. Started to unwrap.

Haven’t removed the bit of harness going to the fuel tank & rear heater, or the one that runs under the truck along the passenger side frame rail. I’ll get there.

Impressive.

Someday I will have to pull my slightly hacked up harness and redo it to work with current layout. I'm really liking your blue tape labeling and wiring board.

As far as the choke and vent pulls I don't know of a way to fix these crimped on cables and purchased new replacements for the broken or seized up ones.

If I didn’t stay hyper-organized there’s no way I’d finish this successfully! I have so many notes/labels in the truck too.

I’ll see what I can do with my pull knobs that have cables. Maybe not any time soon though.

No more progress on the harness. My day job & side business have been kicking my ass. Next step is to account for the different lengths of each color wire. A couple hours in the garage and I should have a list of what I need to order.

I did order some wire from two new suppliers for some of the Cruiser doodads I make for the side biz. Part of that is evaluating their quality for the doodads I make AND for the 40 harness. We’ll see what I get, hopefully it’s good stuff.

Mostly I’ve been ordering parts. The oil filter on my truck is the neat canister/housing type and the element was recently discontinued. Picked up one of those. Got some various hardware. Got brand new OEM round turn signals as well as bib lights. It amazes me Toyota still has supply on those - and the sale price is stupid cheap on both.

I snapped one of the threaded studs on the cowl vent flap removing that - the whole linkage had to come out to get the main wiring harness out. Probably common since it’s about an M4 or M5 stud and tiny nut that sit out in the weather for years. My plan is either to drill & two a hole & insert a small piece of threaded rod with JB weld, or just drill & tap both sides (even the other side with the good stud) and use small screws or bolts. It doesn’t seem too hard, but I bet this is a common issue and I bet there’s a common knowledge “Mud way” or fixing it. I was unable to find anything though.

Another issue is the fuel line banjo fitting on the carb. I’ve picked up a couple and the threads are larger than what the carb wants to take.

This is the 9/69 - 73? carb. Dual barrel. Not the goofy mid-69 dual barrel though. Looked into different fuel line fittings and so far haven’t dug up any info on Toyota changing those. I have more homework ahead of me.

Yep, I think the larger are later...
