Also gave the new hood some seam sealer treatment and getting it prepped for install and paint. The seam sealer from the factory was lacking to say the least. It wasn’t uniformly applied and it shrank over time. There were plenty of spaces that needed filling and an entire tube of this 3M 08115 panel binding adhesive was just enough for the whole hood

Happy new year. Got more work done yesterday. Slowly stripping the block. Bagging and tagging. I’m almost to the point of cleaning and I’m waiting on a few more parts before I drop my head off.

I’m replacing the timing chain, gears, and guides. The old ones are intact and in great condition but I bought new ones already so I’m going to use them.

I replaced the hard and soft lines that are impossible to get to with the engine installed. The old set is in great shape too. I didn’t need to replace it but I figured 210k miles, and it’s accessible so why not.

Looking Good!

The paint on the underside of the hood looks new. You are very thorough and organized; I don’t wonder why.
Thanks brother, the hood is new! I damaged my hood during a towing incident, so I bought a new one. Wasn’t cheap, but im happy to have a new one.

What machine shop are you going to use for the head?

Amazing work so far btw
There are a few around me; I cold called a bunch of automotive shops and asked where they source their machine work. There’s a place called Top Speed which came referred by four different places. I might take it there or I know of another man who has been in the business for 4 decades. He recently sold his machine shop but still runs it for the new ownership. His name is Keith Cutshall. He is willing to take my head and do all the work during his “off time”.

I was quoted prices that begin at $200 from Top Speed. Seems cheap to me.

Your new hood needed new body sealer/ seam adhesive? I’m assuming it was manufactured a long time ago but has been sitting in a red and brown box for a couple decades?

Yes, G. Here are pictures of the new hood when I unboxed it. Take note of the gaps around the stiffeners. You can see the creamy colored factory seam sealer is protruding on some areas and completely unseen in others. I’m sure it shrank but I’m betting a less than adequate application from the factory is why it looks this way

I agree it looks like it didn't get enough. Good call filling the gaps, your project is very inclusive!

Thanks buddy. Had this part laying around for ages. Figure now is a good time as any to swap it. Old one looked like my underwear after a week of binge drinking. Blown out.

Don't forget to have louvers cut in your hood before paint ... so you go faster.

But he’s not painting it white, so it’s gonna be slow no matter what…

Waiting on parts for my head; mainly lifters and a few odds and ends that I probably ordered before, but forgot I had.

Meanwhile the cleaning continues.

Tonight, I will inventory my new TOYOTA OEM parts and get them prepared for build up of the block.

The head will be going to the machinist sometime in the next week or two depending on when my parts get here.

I don’t need to clean this SOB beforehand, do I?
