You tried Slee coils yet? The difference for me with Slee from OME was night and day. That and the Fox shocks I was running over OME shocks. I am sticking with the Slee HDP in the back but going to King shocks, getting rid of coil springs in the front and going c/o's.
I'm running OME J's in front, Heavy's in the rear. I wasn't unsatisfied with my OME setup until I went along on the trail run with Darren, Adam, Justin and Woody at Cruise Moab last week. They all were running Slinky setups. I road with Darren and with Woody at one point to compare. My truck is heavy with plans to get heavier. Huge difference for me. The ride and control was quite impressive. Never felt too soft or out of control even at Baja style maneuvers. If you like what you have that's cool but do some comparison before you buy your next set. Slinkys are on my upgrade list and moving up quick in priority. Thanks Darren!
this is the about the same (rate) as your basic OME medium coil. for the same 1/2" drop the factory coil would be 170lb and Icon would be 200lb until you compressed it a couple inches then Icon would change rate to 280.
The advantage is that it will droop and not come unseated. So as far as ride quality on terrain where the coils don't come unseated the ride improvement is primarily attributed to shock valving.
That is just under a 12" shock. I can tell you from experience 12" shocks don't work with anything less than 4" of lift, if you have less lift the shock will bottom out before the bumps touch, worst in the rear. With the slee coils a 12" shock just barely works. 12" shocks wouldn't work when I had OME coils, even with 2" spacers.
@RMP&O I respect your knowledge & craftsmenship but your coming in mid stream on this. Have you read up on this in the front part of the thread? I'm sure you haven't. Slee springs are great & many people have been very happy with them like you.
AutoCraft Slinkies are a great addition to the choices we 80 series folk can choose from. I like these because it's under 4" of lift where most of the vibrations start accruing.
I would be curious on pricing for the springs alone as well. Seems that vendors are pricing these with fancier icon shocks and trying to sell the package for $3k which is way over budget for me on a suspension setup. I guess I am cheaper when it comes to stuff like this. You can get a J spring setup with ome shocks for fairly cheap. I just don't see the major benefit to switching to an expensive setup like this. It would be nice to have some real world data on how these springs outperform the standard ones other than "they are slinky". I am assuming you really don't get much more droop as the axle is going to be limited by the shock in most cases. At least for me this is out of the budget I am willing to spend on one area of my truck. Not to say they are not worth the money, as that is a personal opinion, just not for me. I gotta agree with RMP&Q
if you could try it you would be floored.
a month ago I would laugh about this kind of price range for an 80 suspension.
i rode in that Snowy truck at cruise moab...
unreal.
simply unreal.
didn't even make sense.
they need to shoot some gopro footage of that truck.
it's got me saving my pennies..and I don't put money into aftermarket for my 80 much
Lots of people will say "what's the big deal?" Or "why would I pay for that?"
Even after explaining differences the questions will still remain for a lot of those people. The real answer to the question is "Go for a ride." Everyone I know who has driven a truck or ridden in a truck with this setup has realized quickly that these are a BIG step up from other common setups. It just has to be experienced to fully understand. Every person I took for a ride said the same thing, that they were sold on them and planned to get them.
Yeah, I've been begging for some video.
Sometimes your having so much fun one forgets to take pics or vid.
I like most have been waiting for this a long time. It's finally in the USA & I'm itching to get them... they are kind of like a mystery right now. Not having a spec chart to compair is like a mystery, but sounds like no mystery to the fortunate few that had a chance to get a ride in a rig with the AutoCraft set up. Even the 2.0 shocks sounds like a must have.

I don't doubt it. If I am honest, suspension is not my forte and my knowledge is more geared towards old school leaf sprung junk. LOL. I would love to ride in one outfitted to feel the difference first hand.
Think before people try the coils they should try a rig with fox, King or icon shocks instead of OME. Also make sure the spring rate match the rig weight. The difference is night and day! My cheapo lift with just TJM progressive springs and cheapest fox 2.0 shocks rides amazingly well both on and off the road. now I just need to change the bushings to new OEM rubbers.
I'm with @Qball , I have the budget slinky setup right now.
TJMs measure out 21" free ht up front and 20" free ht rear. I would need 28" extended shocks to unseat these. Rear is dual rate. 2" lift. They don't take weight too well but ride really well with light to medium build trucks.
The big change though is shock technology. That's what will transform the ride. The Fox 2.0s are an example of that. Newer shock construction trickled down to an affordable price, minus the adjustable hi/lo C and R and custom valving. I'd imagine custom Icons must feel downright amazing.
I'm jumping in here, as I've had it with my standard 2" TJM lift / shock kit. It limited what my rig truly could do at Cruise Moab. Are these slinkies actually available for order yet?

I hear ya, it is no worries. I am not putting them down at all. If I hadn't got Slees I would be interested. I was also just commenting on the shocks, I don't see how you will ever run a 12" shock with anything less than 4" of lift. I had 12" shocks with OME coils and spacers and the 12" shocks bottom out a lot when the truck was loaded up.

Not saying slinky is bad but it seems to me that a lot of people rush to an expensive setup without understanding what makes a suspension good and most of us don't need that level of performance.
No matter how expensive or great of a product is without proper setup it's garbage anyways. If I put too much weight on my Tjm progressive springs they are then terrible. If you put right amount of weight in OME springs they also are butter smooth, I had both. Slee springs are great BUT you need extra weight or they also are very stiff. I can't stress this enough if you don't need extreme performance(100 miles of high speed desert run, or extreme articulation for rock crawling) just by switch to the cheap fox 2.0 will transform the ride. They are literally night and day better than the garbage OME shocks. BTW don't get adjustable shocks because extreme few knows how to adjust them properly, and settings are different for different terrain which takes time to dial in. Only racers trying to get max speed for specific course really need adjustability.
That being said I'm also tempted to get the slinky coils just to get get a bit more droop but it all depends on the price.
