@MacDaddyRabbit did your air cleaner have all the internals? I was talked out of powder coating my heater box by pighead over in the 40/55 section but my air cleaner NEEDS to be media blasted and powder coated. I’m having a bear of a time removing the little rusted screws holding all the internals in…been soaking them for going on a week. Might try heat next.
and yes my breather had the screwed on underpanel with the guts... gotta take that out.. some plastic in there that the heat won't be gentle on .. at all...

Wondering if anyone up near Bozeman Montana remembers this motor and piggie? Anyone have a history of it? The immediate PO doesnt have any 411 on it...
My thought is because of the total engine being painted blue, it's possibly been rebuilt... no oil cooler which is interesting... any guesses on the markings on the valve cover? Is it "Intake .008 and Exhaust .014" ??? what would that mean if so? I have no idea.....Engine number confirms it's a may 77 block...View attachment 2955292
The numbers are for setting valve lash. These are solid lifter engines. I have a chart that can help you simplify this - you set #1 @ TDC, set 6 intake and exhaust valves, then bump it over 180 and set the remaining 6...

If you are waiting for the carb, you might want to source a set screw w/ an allen head, vs. the slotted plug currently. I guess you could always drill and extract yours, but since you are waiting...

I’ve always used this chart to set my valves cold. Started using this for my 60 but used it on my 40 and 45 with good success. I have no desire to adjust valves leaning over a furnace or even worse with the engine running.View attachment 2960522
Hopefully this is self-evident. If not, ask questions!

Sophia the Patina Queen will be Sopia the white and green again prior to years end.. I am now leaning heavily toward getting her repainted.
General thoughts are:
I enjoy getting old TLC's back on the road for the next owner..
The work with preserving the patina is way more work than I want to be worried about.
This truck is 100% original from what I can tell at this point, worth saving
She's had prior damage/repair/repaint on the two passenger side doors, if she's going to be saved they need attention .
Roof has already been repainted by a po...was originally green, now it's white...
It's got minimal rust other than the patina, and I don't want to see the rust that is there deteriorate her into a parts truck...

My shop is next to a PnB craftsman, and he's offered to 'save' this truck at a fair price... if I'm not in a hurry and I'm not..
About 20 total pieces are at the powder coater, once I get those back and reinstalled I'll get some pics up..

Basically toooo much patina, (I like the look, not the work) more than I want to preserve... she's worth saving, and too original to not repaint..
So it'll be a dash cap or redo, new seat covers, shocks, springs, front end rebuild, tie rods, brakes, etc as well eventually.... $5,000 budget..

My timeline on 'road ready' gets pushed back w this approach, maybe she can make SSS 2022...

I like it! Can't wait to see how she turns out...

The PnB craftsman (he's 69, been doing it since his teens) owns his solo one man business and will do 'fast', but prefers slow. He 'owns' his work, and is detail oriented.. he'll have it for about six months..... excited to see it transform... got the items back from the powder coater... PnB friend says to wait on installation until after work is done.... which is ok I've got plenty to do before he gets it anyway...

Oh man this 55 is gonna be beautiful! I’m just doing the bare minimum (maybe a touch more) and it’s shocking how many things one needs to source! Having handy neighbors is the best.

Next step is here.. My PnB neighbor has made room in his client inventory for my patina green/white recovery.. She's getting moved over this morning.. JimTLC has the carb, but we're pushing/pulling her over... I'll get some current pics up later today, and I'm going to document the progress over probably the next 6 months. I'm sticking w the original paint color code and scheme..277 and EA12.... here goes...

It will be an exciting 6 months!
Thanks for the support/confirmation re the decision on addressing the paint... I went back and forth and my thoughts are this is a truck that could be around 30-40 years from now, worth saving... what's really nice as well, it's right next door and the plan is to document it's transformation to some extent... my PnB friend/neighbor is excited about it also... he did the my other pig (red n white) so he's feeling pretty confident about this one...

So cool and a good opportunity to get in there and do some hands on with him. I'm sure he wouldn't mind a guy helping him with the sanding, etc. It's fun having a project to work on.

I think you're making the right choice. I assume he's got all the metal working skills? I'm thinking that is going to be the hard part when I get to that point with my pig.
Thanks... Interesting (to me) detail, in response to metal working skills, this guy is amazing.. He does a ton of insurance work of course.. He cuts off rear ends, quarter panels, front clips, and goes to the 'junkyards' around here and removes the mirror part himself, brings it back to the shop, and I'm in amazement at how he does it... A definite honed and dialed in skill set... his metal work is exceptional and the best part of what he does.. The green/white took an impact to the left rear at the bumper corner, low speed, but still left some damage (I'll get some pics) and of course it suffered some rust intrusion over the years as well, so I offered to find a replacement panel... he quickly said not needed he could do it... and my bet is it'll be a mirror reflection of the other corner! He's that good.. I've got a set of the new front floor panels offered by Remy1974 and we're going to replace the front left driver's floor only... as he did on the red/white... so yeah, I've been watching/learning from him but from my seat he's been doing it for 50 years.... he's cutting out any perforated rust, replacing w metal... I'm very fortunate to be his neighbor.... Just 411, he's moving to Atlanta in about a year... so I'll be losing that... but if anyone is within consideration distance he's VERY $$$$ reasonable...
He's a one man band, owns all of his equipment, and does restos as a passion, insurance work for a living... I'm a huge fan obviously.. grins

I went over today to get some on-site pics but he's not there today.. I'll get some up tomorrow for sure...
