Regular post office is best.

Case in point. I hopped off line and into the truck to pick up dinner from Taco Bell at 4:16pm today. Fawker has gone down my street six times today. I come back from TB and there‘s a carburetor box sitting on my porch.

Hmmmm. Quite the conundrum.

I’ve found in the past, with insurgents, insurrectionist and the occasional troublesome delivery driver, the ”L” shaped ambush has a very pacifying effect.

Ryan, thoughts?

A Taco Bell ambush is pretty serious also!

Pieces and parts for the Mule are trickling in..Getting ready this AM to head down to the garage to chase wires..!!
Next to a proctologist exam this is my favorite activity. I’ll post up some pics for the visual crowd. Not the proctology exam, the wiring. Figured I better clarify that before I get one of those special PM’s from a moderator.

@65swb45

Ok Mark, package inbound via USPS w/no sig required. I’ll give you a call in a few days to discuss.

“Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship”.

Old men and children have short attention spans.

The day started according to plan with a new ignition switch, new starter(s) and grounding straps. That’s enough new whizz bang pieces to make even the most jaded torque wrench crusader smile. Yep, I was going to replace the Mules whirly starter and be done before dinner (old folks eat at 1700). Well, that was the plan anyway.

I removed the air cleaner assembly to free up some light in the 2 Stall dungeon I’m working out off. Bedsides a copious coating of dust, debris and a stage one of a patina thread, I found the nesting place of an ice age species of wooly mice.

Ok, note to self. Clean and polish air cleaner assembly.

Its a bit dark in the garage. Reminds me of the heady days in the storage building teaching Fred how to remove old bed liner. Those were defiantly the “salad years”...but, despite the low light conditions, I managed to remove the steering wheel housing and install the new ignition switch. Plug and play. I was going to be done in no time.

I‘d removed the old starter, REMAN Napa offering, a few days ago. Had a clear shot to success. Installed the new grounding strap on the frame without issue. This was going smooooth. A little too smooth.

Piece of cake so far. Easy one banana job.

Now the hard part...squeezing my aching back-bulging disk-semi arthritic-can’t see-deteriorating motor skills-and give a sh#t attitude under the Mule, sans creeper. OK mission accomplished....Except the starter was lying on the garage floor about 4 ft out of reach...I did manage to reverse engineer my way from under the Mule and retrieve the starter.

Ok, one more time repeating the old man shuffle under the mule. 17mm socket in tow I start with the lower bolt and add the grounding strap. Just a few turns to hold it in place and then....the door bell rings.

Serpentine low crawl out from under the Mule, grab machete hanging on the back of the door, formulate plan to dispose of the body. Put on war face, open door. It’s the UPS man. Demeanor changes, happy face goes on.

Now this is where it goes off the rails.....Its a long over due package from H.S. Precission. It’s a custom stock for the Weatherby 06. That’s almost as good as a new T-case..Almost. Well, you can’t leave that
kind of eye candy in the box. One hour later, the Weatherby is sitting pretty with a new Vortex mounted.

better eat some lunch....With lunch under my belt I’m ready to re-engage. Phone rings, it’s my taxidermist. I have him on speed dial and a standing retainer.

”Jeff”?
“Yep”.

”Your deer is ready”.
”I’ll be right here”.

Sooooo, looks like I’ll be finishing up the starter swap on Wednesday.

The Mule is a tempestuous beast.

Up and at it this AM to wrap up what should be a 10 minute Job.

Double check the FAQ to make sure I’m using the correct wire of off the main harness. My 76 has two B/W wires.

large B/W wire with appropriate plug. Check
Small B/W not used. Check
Grounding strap. Check
Main power from battery. Check
New ignition cable. Check

Puff up chest, give Mule that “how bout’ them apples” look. Saddle up and hit the key.....Crickets. Hmmmm.

Mule gives me that “how bout’ them apples” look...

No whirl-no spin-no engagement. Double check all connections, ground on battery. Repeat. Nothing.

OK, maybe I have a bad starter. break out “new spare”. Repeat process, same result.

I visually and physically test each and every fuse. All good.

It dawns on me that my seat belt indicator did not sound when I hit the key...I pull the lights on and get a slow dim glow.

Soooooo, I’m thinking bad battery.

This is the connection I used from the FAQ:

It’s not common for an engine bay to be clean enough to see the starter bolt.

I swear, if you make my engine jealous… :censor:

😛

You mean to tell me that they don't alll look like @GA Architect engine bay?

The Mule abides...

I‘ve got to admit, this AM when I had no response on the starter whirly, I had my chin on the curb.
Turns out my “Red top” was the culprit. Two red top batteries in five years. In the Intel world that’s called an indicator..

Called up a favor down at the diesel shop. Ended up with an interstate. 150$ out the door. Friends and family discount was in effect. Temporarily wired everything up according the FAQ. Sacrificed a chicken and mounted the cockpit.

5-6 pumps on the go fast pedal and hit the launch button. Booooom it cranked, coughed and sputtered. A little tug on the choke, hit the key, one more hesitant sputter and the Mule fired up like an F-35. Kinda sounded like one in the confines of my smallish garage.

Surely doesn’t the good Lord look out for Scotsmen and intrepid Mule drivers. I know what you’re thinking, a third grader can change a starter and if I could find one willing to crawl under the mule he would have a paying gig.

It was the rash of “electrical issues” that have popped up on the forum as of late that had me somewhat spooked.

Semi-charmed So far. I did however notice some of the front harness is looking a little questionable. I want to take care of that before I get into the Sniper instal.

Few gratuitous pics for the visually stimulated crowd.

Mark - I think I scored one of your last headers way back when. I was admiring it today while contemplating the Sniper install. Almost a shame to drill a hole in the collector for the O2 bung...

work of art- Take a bow.
