It was time..

Old filter out, new filter/clamps in (w/freshly painted bracket) 🙄.

I slipped up and got behind on the “Mona Lisa of cruisers” thread. I’m glad you moved forward on the shotgun caddie, nice work. Eager to see it in action. I can’t believe the Ohio boys let that fuel filter get by em, this rig deserves new and shiny. Love the grommets, nice finished look. Waiting patiently for a coed lake pic.

your thread is awesome but getting pretty big!! so because i’m a bit lazy i haven’t scrolled through everything to look for an answer to a question i have!! what body mounts did you use? the aqualu tub comes with mounts but i also have some daystar ones. any suggestions? the aqualu are just cut rubber squares but are a little thicker. i worry it might throw off the cowel height as im just replacing the back half. i dont want to make problems for myself by using something that wasn’t specifically designed for the aluminum tub!

Energy Suspension..👍

Jeff, I don’t know if it’s just the camera angle, but the outlet on that fuel filter looks like it has a kink in it.

Hit me with a good recommendation on a 2wt..
After breaking my Helios rod for the 4th time and dealing with Orvis again I'm going to go ahead and say I'm never going to spend my money on another Orvis rod. Customer service was wonderful and they're taking care of the repair on it this time, but breaking a premium priced rod over and over is getting old. Only one of the breaks was legitimately user error, the rest IMO are flaws with the rod, could be I just have a blank from a bad batch, or something bigger, I don't know, but out of all the rods I have it's the only one I've ever broken. I even fish my 3wt harder than the 5wt Helios.

Back to the subject at hand, if I were about to buy a 2wt rod, there are 2 rods that immediately stand out that I would want to cast. The Winston Pure, 7' 2wt, and Sage Dart, 7'6" 2wt. Both of those rods come with a big price tag, next step down would be the Echo Carbon XL or TFO Blue Ribbon series of rods. The Winston and Sage are made in USA, the other 2 are more than likely Asian imported blanks at the very least, possibly made in an Asian country entirely. The prices of all of those reflect. I have a couple of TFO rods and really enjoy them, they feel relaxing to cast, but maybe not as precise.

Scott makes a G series 2wt, 7'7" that is up there with the premium rods also.

If I was about to drop the coin on one I'd probably drive over to Twin Bridges and cast a Winston on the Beaverhead or Ruby. Just because that would seal the deal.

👍 I’ll take a look at it in the AM.

Sage advice..🍻

Take into consideration the repair costs on some of the rods, Sage has been phasing out certain lines of rods for a while now, some you can fix for under a Benji, others are going to cost you upwards of $175, some they won't repair. Read through their repair matrix.

Winston is similar, but a more structured chart.

Ideally a $1K rod won't break while fishing, so their shouldn't be a need for a repair.

In reality, dogs, car doors, rear hatch on a 40, rocks, eagles, and life break more rods than anything. Thus the reason we send $1K rods in for repair. Unless it's an Orvis rod.

I'll fully vouch for the difference in quality between the premium lines of rods and the mid grade lines of rods. In the hands of a mediocre caster its not that big of a deal , in the hands of a skilled caster the difference can be amazing.

Like putting a M24 in the hands of a high school kid, and then to a skilled marksman.

You'll know it when you see it.

@rkymtnflyfisher

May be swapping out some of my freshwater kit for the “Salt Life”. So, what I keep here in the Land of Nod will be only what fills the bill. Keeping the 5 WT March Brown travel rod (I’m sentimental), and one or two others. I have a couple of Orvis rod/Reel combos on the shelf I’ve never used 🙄.

Though a nice 2 WT would be ideal for Small WV water. I usually use a ultralight spinning combo with 2lb line.
My casting skills are a “work in progress”.

Go check out the Echo Carbon rods, if you're a middle of the pack caster drinking Keithstone Lights on the banks of a small crick, you won't be disappointed.

You want to drink Old Crow or 21 year old Redbreast?

You smoke Backwoods cigars or something better?

You drive a 40 or a Subaru Outback?

See where I'm going?

@middlecalf would say call Glenn Brackett and get a fine handcrafted bamboo masterpiece.

I might suggest getting a pre-fire Leonard or a pre-70’s Sharpes impregnated Aberdeen Scottie also 😉. I almost got Glen Brackett to make me a trout spey rod masterpiece. But I blew it.
