Thinking a couple of black wire ties around the shaft to not only seal better but for clearance for the lock. Believe the gap is narrower on the OEM lock. Interesting of the flip locks I've had over the years no two were identical.

Did you buy the boot online? This may very well work even better on the 10/82 style lever. Particularly if the hole hasn't been cut in the hub yet. Factory hole was removed rather wide from the factory.

I did get it online. They are presently obsoleting the previous version of this boot so you may see a couple versions when searching. I like this version better than the plain slotted grommet as it allows for small error in placement.

It also creates a better seal then the other style. It does also create a pocket for dirt and other things to collect. I have parts from an 84 PTO shifter boot. Those have a lower boot and a flush guide at the hump.

I found these small bevel washers for the PTO winch (inside frame) on fleabay, PN 5310-01-344-4263, Y00015046, 2GL542, used to attach a tank of some kind to a truck/tractor. 4/$10 plus shipping. They had 7 sets of 4 left last I checked. The hole is 7/16 so a little drilling is required. The slope of the bevel is about 1mm off based on the drawing that was posted of the OEM washer. I think it is close enough, the frame takes a little bend there, so I don't know if the OEM bevel washers sit perfectly flat.

Update on body work status. Had to go deeper than planned. It's getting new wheel well tops and front floors. Pretty rotted out under rockers and fuel tank. The PO had mounted the roll bar poorly and mangled the tops of the wheel wells, plus kind of rotted out in the back where it meets the 1/4.

Got lucking on my 73. This is the worse rust on the 40. Because it's FST and zero plans to ever run a hard top on this one with just patch rear corner skin which I have a donor quarter to get the correct roll.

The wheel well drill some hole to add a home made roll bar. Did not use any of the seats or seat belts fixed. Luckily just fill those with bondo.

Hacked a hole for a second fuel tank.

None of these are too bad to repair.

Unfortunately he couldn't leave the dash alone.

Amazingly he did not cut the radio opening.

Wish mine was that solid. Are the radio mounting tabs gone or just bent back? I like the Archer noise suppressor, I had one of those in my Buick back in the 70s/80s.

Here is the before picture. That a trailer light plug used to control a electric winch I was told it used a military jet engine starter. Winch is still there.

Here is the opposite side.

The tabs on the radio opening are there just bend back on either side. To my knowledge this cruiser hasn't been on the road since 1988. Registration on the rear plate expired in 1988. I've owned it thirty years. Out of the blue someone offered it to me a price I couldn't pass up. The BETTER half was pleased about the purchase, I had just bought another FJ40 so didn't do anything with at that time. It was for sale on mud back in 2007 for $3,500. Only one interested party and cost of shipping across the country was a deal breaker.

It had this awful A/C evaporator under the dash. Had a red 72 hard top and doors on it when I bought it. Luckily all the soft top pieces were still there. The fact it was a FST was the real reason I bought it.

I did buy the PTO wedges off flea bay. Next time I where I have my winches I'll compare them to OEM. Off hand I would say they are very close to stock. Compared to what the estimated cost to reproduce these are cheap. I'm sure if you have posted these in a thread about factory PTO winches all sets would be gone by now. Good find, thank you.

Mine 72 developed a seep at a seam in 84 or 85. I did the alcohol proof liner from JC Whitney. The inside of the tank was spotless, no leaks since I treated the tank.
