I wasn't expecting a CB to be a must have! Might have to look into getting one installed this spring...

Please try your new CB before you drive all the way out and find out that it is not working. I would say you lose like 80% of the 'vibe' of the event by not being able to communicate on the CB and hear the group chatter while up in the San Juans. We cannot reiterate the 'CB MUST WORK' guideline enough.

thanks

CB is mandatory. There are too many areas where we need to relay info back through the group and communication is essential. A handheld CB is fine as long as it works. Because I mostly use HAM radio when I'm traveling, my CB setup is a pretty basic unit. It's a Uniden 510XL and a Wilson Little Wil mag mount antenna. It works great and costs less than $100 for everything. I have it setup so I can quickly remove it when I don't need it in the truck.

What HAM rig do you have? What portion of the radio spectrum is allocated for that kind of use? I've had a lot of fun with CB's but it would be nice to make the move to HAM to eliminate some of the CB Rif Raf.

I am getting my HAM license and will be bringing one of the cheaper dual band handhelds. Will I really need a CB too?

HAM requires a license to be used. We do not expect everyone to secure that license and purchase a HAM when a CB works fine in these types of groups. As long as they are working properly (i.e. have actually been used). Sorry about that inconvenience, but most have not made the leap to HAM, from our experience.

I can attest that as a long time HAM communicator and snubbing my nose up at CB, I missed out on the "color commentary" of the group as we moved through various areas of the San Juans. If there was an issue, i could talk to the group leader on 2m, but as a course of the discussion, it was on CB.

I had a handheld CB in my truck, but not an external aerial, so when we got separated by geogrpahical elements, i simply didnt hear the discussions.

so I strongly recommend a vehicle-powered CB unit with an appropriately mounted (and tuned!) external whip!

The line here is actually near the edge and counter-intuitive to where your gut tells you to be. When you hug this inside wall, it throws you back out towards the edge and it's enough to require a baby wipe. @ntsaint took a nice hop towards the edge a few years ago. Someone has it on video. It's a butt clincher. Mrs. Martin promptly ejected out the passenger side and walked.

I have that video... attached. it doesn't look like much because you can't see over my hood to the rear axle, but it moved enough to warrant the Mrs jumping out! You can hear Stan guiding us through the reset on the line.

as stan said, we reset and rolled through it. it was fun. really fun.

I didn't like that feeling at all! Your brain is telling you drive to the left and the truck is sliding towards the clif, yeah awesome!

Thanks for that input. I will keep the HAM and the CB both on my list.

Is this full? Got my first LC (2006) and I'm thinking this would be a great event to see its capabilities.

Hasn't even opened yet buddy. Wait until they post for sign up later in the year.

Reached out to Chris this evening for a sticker from last year (didn't get one) apparently Stan had one laying around and will be sending it out soon! Even in the little things these guys pull through for us, looking forward to HIH this year, thanks guys!

Poughkeepsie has a bypass for the wall, but the other sections do not.
Is the bypass legally open now? I know a Montrose based 4wd club had been working with the USFS to reopen the original Poughkeepsie road as a bypass for the wall. I had an opportunity to run it 3 years ago in my Jeep with a few of the club members...needless to say it had far more pucker factor than the wall. Loose, narrow and off camber. Apparently many years ago the wall was an alternative route prior to becoming the only route.

A handheld CB with a magnetic antenna on the roof should work great for group communications.

.
It was legally open last year and even marked on the trail signage. Unfortunately, we had to take that path after waiting over an hour for a Jeep group to come down the Wall, the rain started and we could not make it up. Poughkeepsie (wall or not) is one of my favorite trails. So much scenery, it's awesome.

Great information, thanks for the confirmation. I'll look into that ASAP!

That is great news. Thanks! I missed Poughkeepsie last year so I wasn't sure if the bypass had been completed or not. So many folks have missed out on the spectacular scenery of Poughkeepsie based on the 'wall' scare it is sad.
