4x4 Labs Owners Chime In...Single Vs. Dual Swingout?

I have a full length single swing out built out of 2"x2"x1/4" and it sags quite a bit with 37" and full gas cans. Plan on building a new one out of 2"x3"x1/4".

I bought my single swingout coming up on two years ago thinking two thoughts: 1. It would be a single "half" swingout that I could add on later to and 2. I wouldn't be using gas cans. Unfortunately, things change...

Little did I know, I'd end up going on a trip that made additional gas more of a "need" than a "want" and one of the local members helped build a gas can attachment for my rear bumper. Luckily, mine had holes for a second attachment that we utilized for the gas can holder.

I'm content enough with my setup that I won't change it for now since my gas can holder is only on for days at a time, vs the spare which is on there 24/7 (minus right now - need the extra room in the garage to overhaul the cooling system). The added weight of just the gas can holder is noticeable and much more so when you throw an additional 10 gallons of gas in there. There's probably half inch of sag just in the arm at the latch point. Even the driver's side of the vehicle sags when the swingout is open.

If I were buying a bumper again, I'd buy the duals or request that Luke make the bumper with a single "half" swingout.

I'll attach pictures here in a minute for reference.

Somehow I managed to fill most of the scratches with just a coat of wax. Neither here nor there, see below for pictures:

@bloc . I added a gusset from spindle to tire holder arm. And a solid steal block in center under 2x2 that sits on bumper shell. Stiffened it right up.

Could you send me some pics of how you strengthened up your 4x4 labs tire carrier from the shaking. I have been trying to figure out a solution as well. Any pics and information would be much appreciated.

Thanks

@mjeckell . I posted 2 pics in this thread..

Swing outs suck, but not as bad as carrying a spare in the back or gas cans on top. I have duel swing outs that are equal length. They just barely clear my trailer when it is hitched up.

I have yet to build my 4x4 labs bumper, but I am for sure, going with a dual, I use my LC every day and with a labs bumper you can't put the spare under the cruiser, and in the back takes up to much space

correct me if i'm wrong, but aren't you limited to only one attachment then? so...only a spare?

There is a pic or two on the first page of the thread that shows how the attachments mount to the swing outs. The attachments are modular so the user can have multiples and switch them out. I was at Labs back in '05 and helped Luke develop this feature. With two swing outs you can run one spare and a ladder/bike rack/fuel basket etc. You could run two spares. You could have two ladders.

I understand that part...great feature and one of the main reasons I went with the 4x4 labs. Just didn't realize you would have the space for two mounts on a single swing arm until I saw the pics from rockstate45 above.

The single is a long throw and if you're planning to put an awning on the back or side of the truck, you'll have to walk out into the rain to get around it

I got one two years (4x4 labs) ago wish I never had. the thing bounces up and down all the time with a 35" tire on it. Talked to LUKE and he said he had never heard of it and it was probably my truck....found a friend with the same issue and couldnt believe it that LIUKE told the same thing to. He ended up telling me to remove the hi lift jack to fix the problem. This was after I drove 12 hours and waited 2 months for the CUSTOM bumper and sliders.....that when I got there I found out he forgot all the custom things I wanted done. still kicking myself 2 years later for getting it. LUke is a great guy or I would have posted this sooner...he tried to make it right but in the end suggested I drive 12 hours to bring it to him to inspect....now I am building an hdj81 and don't even want that bumper on my new truck because of the bumpiness

I went with no swing outs for the clean look and spent the extra money on an inside mounted spare and flip out windows;)

Yeah but if you would have opted for the rear tire carrier, you'd have more cargo space and wouldn't need the flip-up windows to access the overhead cargo nets and such...;)

One needs flip out windows much more with a rear swing outs having been there and done that. My flip up windows dont even have access my cargo area;)

No arms yet. I would like to incorporate everything inside if they fit. On my wife's 200 I have dual swing arms and only install them when needed for wheeling trips. On 80 series rear bumper deletes spare tire mount. So inside mounting option makes sense since I don't have drawers or third row seats.

Also a fan of the clean look.:)

Our Interior Tire Carrier my be of interest to you. It now can be purchased without a PUMA mount if you done mind drilling two hole in the floor for mounting.

@jurassic cruiser did you ever resolve this issue with your bumper? mine does the same and drives me nuts. i put mine together so likely I didn't do something exact, but I still want to fix it. I can't tell if it is because the little triangle piece on the end of the swingout at the bottom doesn't make full contact when closed? flex in the spindle (i find this hard to believe) or just the leverage of the 35" tire and small vibrations with the weight cause the thing to move around a lot. I sometimes worry its just going to break off. been this way for a few years now. I've tried tightening down the spindle nut. Wonder what people torque those to on theirs?

There is always going to be some movement with that much weight on that much of a moment arm. plus the Hi-Lift handle is a rattling bastard to begin with. Mine is only excessive when the spindle bearings get loose. And got really bad when the bearings wore out. I’ve replaced them once and need to do the other side yet. I built my kit in 2012. Also try to tighten the latch a little. There certainly could be a problem beyond that, but are my suggestions.
