The 22RE is lucky to go 200k before needing a head gasket and you'll want to do timing chain, sprockets, guides and other things while in there. I consider it normal maintenance for that motor. I would say that coolant consumption is actually the most common way for the 22RE to let you know it's time for a head gasket. If your motor works good for you otherwise, I would just do the work before it gets worse. A lot of people talk about how reliable the 22RE is. It's very reliable if you consider pulling the motor apart every 200k or less reliable. As long as you are willing to do that before overheating it, it will last pretty much forever.

My 3rz came from a prerunner auto. I had to get a manual ECU of the same year on ebay.
Also, all the questions regarding what clutch parts to use on a 3rz swap are answered on the first post of the thread.

Still in infant stages considering the 3RZ swap as well. Other than ECU, and then bellhousing & clutch parts, is there anything else special of using an auto truck?
How hard was it to find a manual ECU for you?

Nothing special other than ignoring or removing the extra wires in the harness that led to the auto trans. No problem finding the 4X4 manual ECU on Ebay. I also had to source the flywheel and bought new flywheel bolts

Go to Toyota parts deal, look up the ECU according to your donor truck/engine year.
It will show you what ECU part numbers that will work. I installed a 2rz from a 2004 auto, got a 2rz manual ECU, used ORS wiring harness worked great.

To update, I was able to beat all the auto transmission codes for my 3rz swap.

I used

3 470 ohm resistors for the transmission shift solenoids

A 2.2k ohm resistor for the transmission temp sensor

Wired the secondary speed sensor to the factory VSS using the wire coming from the SP2+ side of the ECU.

I’ve had a couple hundred miles on it since fixing the last code (P1700) and it hasn’t come back.

This may already be known, but as an update to the 2rz/3rz swap into an IFS truck, I have information from another mud member that you can use an oil pan and pick up tube from a 3rz equipped Landcruiser Prado if you can locate them internationally. 12101-75080 12101-75090 oil pan. 15104-75090 pick up tube.
15301-75011 dipstick.
Just a heads up for anyone planning on doing this, the 12101-75090 Oil pan is discontinued as of last year. If anyone has any leads on one, new or used, please let me know!

I got this kit when I did the 2rz swap into my 2wd pickup

looking around, this part doesn't pull anywhere for a prado.
i only see it as a hilux. which as far as i can tell is the only vehicle that ever had 3rz and torsion bar ifs with right side front diff.
prado went from leafs to coils.

Hmm…I’m pretty sure that’s the rear sump pan on the T100’s, which I currently have. I was told it wouldn’t work with IFS. Maybe it works with 2WD though, because you’ve clearly gotten it to work?

and along these lines 4wd 3rz t100 do not exist.

Ya know, I had to check this. You are correct. The 4WD T100 trucks were 3VZE or 5VZFE. Only the 2WD trucks had the 3RZ in the 1994-1998 model years.

:flipoff2:

i had a friend tell me someone told him the 3rz/ifs pan was early t100. that sent me down the rabbit hole, because afaik 3rz was 2wd only. the parts book confirmed and so did ogbeno.
