3FE exhaust on 2F head

Can't say because I haven't measured the diameter of the pipe. I'll try to get back with you on this later today.

they're about 1 5/8"-1 11/16"

No turning back. The old manifolds are off and I discovered the 2F exhaust is cracked. It's also been leaking between the joints, and the manifold gasket was blown. Stripped down and ready for the 3FE stuffs.

EGR port plugged with large drain plug, M26 x 1.5.

Some observations:
I'm using Remflex gasket and the 2F manifold bolts are a little short because of added thickness of the Remflex gasket and 3FE manifolds. For now I've mixed 2F and 3FE bolts. The 2F bolts had two washers, one smaller and one larger diameter. I had to dremel off the washsers then add one large diameter washers. I'll likely replace the two 2F bolts with 3FE bolts. The 3FE bolts are longer than the 2F bolts; didn't think about measuring the lengths until now .

Plans are to reinstall all parts and fire it up tomorrow and have an exhaust built Monday.

I lucked out there by milling (grinding) the exhaust flange halves to match the 2F manifold thickness...that plug does look good...great. something else I need to do... cheers and good work!

Side-by-side of drain plug and brass plumbing plug. The plumbing plug is referenced in some 3FE desmog thread out there but it's a poor choice for plugging the EGR port in the manifold. This is a plug I had used in a desmog and you can see that there is minimal thread engagement in the manifold from the carbon deposits on the threads. The drain plug on the other hand will fully seat in the port.

Another observation - @LAMBCRUSHER method of milling the 3FE manifold to match the 2F intake thickness is likely the better way to do it. This would circumvent the stacking, JB Welding, and grinding the 1/2 washers on the intake and the 2F bolts can be more easily used.

Gotta admit that drain plug is perfect for the job. When I installed my 2FE I used an expansion plug in the hole.

Done :D:D. Finally a nice quiet non-leaking exhaust system. Running the 2F with only the 3FE exhaust stubs was cool in a redneck sort of way :hillbilly:, until I began driving it to the exhaust shop. The novelty wore off in about 10 seconds. What noise. I thought I was going to go deaf in the 15 mile drive. The noise level difference between being on the throttle and coasting was dramatic.

Found a great local shop that put together the exhaust from 3FE stubs to tail pipe for ca. $160.

oh yeah...it is a sound all its own, innit?

pics of your pipes?

Last winter after installing the 3FE exhaust the 2F seemed to have some stumbling issues when the air temps were cold and I thought that this was due to the intake no longer receiving warmth from the exhaust. Along those lines I was thinking about mounting an electric heating element under the intake. Never did. Sub-freezing temps hit AL over the past week and I've not had any issues with the 2F running poorly in the cold. Earlier this year I had a carb rebuilt by JimC and that made a huge difference along with swapping in a 88C t-stat. No issues now with the 2F running poorly in the cold.

I'm in the process of a full rebuild on a 2F and like the idea of moving over to the 3FE exhaust manifolds from a flow standpoint. Will they bolt up to all versions of the 2F head castings?

The answer is probably yes but I've only put a 3FE on one 2F head.

The exhaust manifolds line up with the ports on the head? I thought the problem was that while the bolt pattern was the same the port alignment was not.....or is that only on the intake?

All the ports are the same intake and exhaust except that the intake ports have notches in them for the injectors, so you cant use the 3fe intake on a 2f head.

Ok. Thanks for the clarification.
