Well, previous owner was running straight water in the cooling system. There was serious electrolysis going on on the aluminum oil pump /timing cover, and I was burning about a quart of oil every 1000 miles. The pitting on the oil pump / timing cover was so bad you couldn't get a good seal on the water hoses going to the radiator. It was time. The newer motor doesn't smoke at all on acceleration and hasn't needed a top off of oil yet. The new motor doesn't even need the glow plugs heated to start. It fires right up with compression. I caveat that with it has never been below freezing since I dropped her in. There is a Wilson Switch installed for the cooler weather when the time comes.

How much smoke is too much? On the one I just got if you really get into the throttle you can see a faint trail is smoke in 2-4 gears. But it doesn't happen at low RPMs or in first and fifth gear at all

Well , I am no expert and I'm sure it varies. The Incomplete combustion smoke with tall grades at low rpm or under heavy load didn't bother me as much as 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles.

The 1 qt thing is what I would call, excessive. Moreover, water temps would climb to near redline on steep grades at 80kph which concerned me more than the 1 quart of oil burn per 1600km.

Ok I didn't realize it was consuming that much oil. That certainly is a lot of oil consumption.

Cheers

I've been meaning to post this for a while, but finally got around to it. Here are some fuel efficiency numbers from a recent road trip. Over 3047kms / 1893 miles were clocked and each time the fuel tank was topped off until I saw some diesel foam at the filler neck. Trip started at 2200' MSL at 102 degrees Fahrenheit. The halfway point was at 7000' MSL and then I returned to 2200'MSL. Not sure if we would have gotten better efficiency with standard conditions at sea level, but I would think so. Overall, I was pretty impressed with the numbers achieved by this little 2LT-II engine.

457km with 12.27 gallons = 37.25km/gallon or 23 mpg
396km with 8.9 gallons = 44.5km/gallon or 27.6 mpg
307km with 7.76 gallons. = 39.56km/gallon or 24.58 mpg
524km with 11.65 gallons = 44.98km/gallon or 27.95 mpg
329km with 6.78 gallons. = 48.53km/gallon or 30.15 mpg
374km with 10.05 gallons = 37.21km/gallon or 23.1 mpg
212km with 6.13 gallons = 34.59 km/gallon or 21.5mpg
448km with 10.92 gallons = 41.0 km/gallon or 25.5 mpg

TOTAL AVERAGE:

3047km with 74.46 gallons = 40.92km/gallon or 25.42 mpg

EDIT:
Changed tire size to 33" K02 and it really has not impacted fuel economy.
Recent around town driving indicates:
634km with 16.25 gallons = 39km/gallon or 25.25mpg

That is pretty impressive. 25.42 us mpg = 30.5 imp mpg, or 9.25l/100km! Awesome. Your best tank equates to 7.8l/100km!

Yours is manual right? Have you ever weighed it? What tire size are you running? Lift?

Yes, I have the manual R151. I am running 31x10.50R15 BF Goodrich KO2s and Dobinsons Springs (stock height). I ran with 30 psi in the front tires and 28 psi in the rear. The back seat is out, but we had it loaded up with camping gear. I have not weighed it, but should do it. Both me and the wife are pretty light. We tip the scales together at 265 lbs. I was usually filling up at around the half tank range, but seemed to average a little bit better when I burned the tank down further towards empty. I never had the tachometer above 3000 rpm. I tried keeping it at 2400 rpm range doing 85-90 kph, assuming there was no one behind me. Only a few times was I above 110km/hr and that was on long downhill stretches.

Nick, it may be my imagination, but the that annoying turbo whistling seemed to lessen if I ran a half quart low on the oil dipstick. If I filled the oil up to the FULL line she screamed above 2400 rpm, but if you ran her right at the half quart below the FULL line she seemed to whistle.

Also, the "Blinking Light Syndrome" has somewhat of a fix. I replaced this older battery with a Yellow Top Optima just before the trip. First start of the morning each day I did get the flashing Battery light on the Voltmeter and the Red light flashing on the RPM gauge. However, If I turned the parking lights on or headlights on, the blinking immediately stopped. Which leads me to believe the charging system is looking for some type of load or the external voltage regulator needs to be replaced. Either way, I just need to remember to turn OFF the running lights when I park.

I get same fuel consumption on lj73 with steel rims and same tires. same rpm on long drives and manual gearbox. engine is 2lt from 1986.

Started the Rock Slider project for the LJ today. Contacted both Cruisin' OffRoad and MetalTech4x4 the past few weeks, but neither had the jigs set up for an LJ70, only BJ70s. Raptor 4x4 in Europe does make a set, but they don't offer the kickouts and I really didn't like how their design bolted to the frame. So, the only option is DIY or Raptor 4x4 as of now for LJ70 / SWB owners that are interested in this project. Measurements at Front wheel well to rear wheel well is 52.5" on the LJ70. Will be using 2"x2" DOM cut 52.5" with 1.75" 3/16th for the kick-outs.

Great looking Cruiser!

One note on the sliders, if you just have 2 attachment points make em really strong, 3 is better.

Cheers
Clint

Thanks! Good point on the attachment points. I will put 3. Start with 2 points each side until she is painted. Here are some pics of the mounting tabs made of 3" 3/16th stock. Some grinding is necessary since the brackets taper. Also a good step bit will make life easier. Cut the rear tabs 3"x5" and massage / trim as necessary. The front tabs 11"x3" and trim as necessary

I keep getting distracted from the project at hand by the mail man. New External Voltage Regulator arrived, air filter, and #1 Hose. Hopefully, the new external voltage regulator cures the "blinking light" syndrome.

Decided to head up to SLC for CruiserFest 2017. Glad I did. Saw some great Land Cruisers and met some really nice people. Pictured below very first LC imported to the USA and some other pics with the family in the Land Cruiser Heritage Museum. If anyone gets the chance to visit, I highly recommend it. Great collection of 70 Series Land Cruisers.

After CruiseFest we headed south on I-15 to Spanish Fork where we picked up Route 6. Great scenery the entire route from Diamond Fork to Helper Utah to Arches NP. We had another great day in Utah and on this road trip. Delicate Arch and Landscape Arch pictured below.

Since we were only another 3 hours from Ouray, Colorado, I talked the group into a little off road action on the Alpine Loop. We ventured south from Moab on Route 191 to Route 46/ Route 90 through La Sal and Bedrock over to Ridgeway and 550 up the hill to Ouray. Beautiful ride! Not quite as beautiful as the Loop, but damn pretty.

I did weigh the LJ70 this time prior to leaving Nevada. I put the back seat back in and filled the tank with diesel, and she tipped the scales at 4060 lbs or 1842 kilos with me aboard. I weigh 170lbs dressed so the vehicle weight s/b about 3890 pounds with fluids topped off.

She got about the same mileage as last time with an additional person aboard.

437 km with 11.37 gallons = 38.44 kmg
479 km with 12.40 gallons = 38.63 kmg
410 km with 9.59 gallons = 42.75 kmg
663 km with 17.16 gallons = 38.64 kmg
434 km with 10.44 gallons = 41.57 kmg
424 km with 10.99 gallons = 38.58 kmg

The trip total was 1769 miles or 2847km, averaging 24.59 mpg.

I've had a couple folks PM me about my Dobinson Springs, and I have to say I am very satisfied with them.
I did this job last year and I forget a bit about the job, but it was pretty straight forward (Heck, I did it myself with the Toyota bottle jack).

First impression when I got the springs out of the box was, heck they sent me the wrong springs, (since they sat lower then the stock springs on the ground. However, when I got them in, the LJ actually sat higher. Here are some pics.

Spring compressor, bottle jack, and floor jack, and a 6 pack and you are good.
A rattle can of Rustoleum, all the better.

In the end, the finished product sat about 36" on the (Left) and 35" on the front (Right) or 39mm at the wheel wells and 8mm or 3" at the front bump stops with 31.5" tires.
