2020 Magnuson Supercharger... Well Maybe......

I hounded Magnuson for a few years about making another run of superchargers for my 1997 FZJ80, when they called and said they were going to do it I was blown away by the price.

$4500-$5k was in my mind as fair, I know, I know got to pay to play. Before you bark at me it's just an observation and opinion.

Joey's turbo numbers look a lot more appealing. Additionally after reading many reviews of the turbo and its performance it sounds like it would be a lot more fun to drive especially with my 4:88.

I'm still on the fence and I suppose if I'm honest with myself deep down I'd love to find a fairly priced used TRD supercharger, I do live in Cali after all.... So there's that.

If anyone knows of a used supercharger I'm interested. As the chief mechanic, and I consider myself caretaker rather than an owner/user of my rig I don't plan to sell the 80. I planned to pass it on to my children. That supercharger would be going to a forever home.

Does anyone know the original factory part number for the supercharger?
So I have what may be the only new in box TRD kit, however there could be 1 or two more out there. I paid turbo pricing for mine, which is still less than what Magnuson wanted if they could get 50 pre orders, that never happened. Really comes down to need for smog. A @NLXTACY Turbo kit at 6k is a bargain in this market. For all those in the market waiting it will be sad, as I guarantee manufacturing costs and inflation will make a kit like that 8k in a hurry. New cruiser owners will have no issue paying that, as these are not cheap rigs any more. I know other people are in process with supercharger kits, however personally if it's not smog legal and the same price I am choosing turbo.

Speed costs money. How fast do you want to go?

I've been running the wits end turbo for years. I have stopped swearing near as much as I used to going up steep canyon grades or trying to pass people as it now has enough power to go the speed limit. That being said, I would rather have the low-end torque and HP from a supercharger when I'm off road than the turbo HP at higher RPM's. Truthfully, I would prefer a nice LS swap.

Why people spend that much to make such little power is beyond me
It’s not a horse power thing for me, per se, it’s about having a more enjoyable experience behind the wheel for most of the time I’m driving the truck.

Besides it’s truly bolt on and can easily be removed if for some reason the truck is decommissioned.

I’ve had a blower on my 80 and I can say that it is not $8500 more enjoyable😅. The dollar to fun ratio is terrible

For me it’s not about the fun either. After armoring an 80 for off roading and adding larger tires it can be stressful in certain driving situations like accelerating onto a busy highway. I find that stress is significantly reduces with the Super Charger.

I’m comfortable not being the big HP guy at the event or the fastest guy to 60 mph or whatever other parameter that’s needed to meet you’re FUN criteria.

I’ve got almost 40,000 trouble free miles on this charger and glad I bought it.

Formula One steering wheels cost more than a brand new Land Cruiser.

I guess it comes down to a personal cost-benefit analysis.

FWIW:
They said goal is to ship end of this year, but no set ETA. Said they are waiting on sourcing/making a few small parts. Said the kit for all intents and purposes will be the same as original but some smaller bits may be slightly different than original. They claim they definitely are producing kit, regardless of demand prior. They would not advise size of run, or if they are starting with one initial run. They suggested email to place order; I asked if it was ready to place via website and the person said they "would suggest email" as they are unfamiliar on processing those and ETA. Im not entirely sure what that entails but I had taken enough of their time by that point and hopped off.

the good part is we know they are going to deliver at this point. You pay for it and you will receive one.

I forget the exact number right now.

But somewhere in the realm of 12 pre-market kits are going out to gain interest & develop the potential market/demand.

The first production run being about 50 units. This is 100% happening.

Obviously how well the kits sell will be the litmus test of an on-going available kit.

I was cleaning out the garage and realized I still have the new in-box SC that I ordered from CruiserDan for my defunct '97. I still have hopes of getting another '97.
