I wish I knew why they won’t offer a locker. Most likely it has to do with crawl control being “good enough” in this market for the vast majority of realistic new buyers to overlook that offering.

Dave from Toyota 2 summer ago in Breckenridge commented on this. He said he asked the chief Toyota engineer in charge why no locker option on the 200, and he got yelled at in Japanese something about how the electronics were good enough or better. If anyone in attendance heard differently, please say so.

I don’t recall the yelled-at part, but I do recall the answer.

That’s exactly what Dave said - that the Toyota chief engineer cursed up and down (in Japanese) at the notion of needing a locker.

Ridiculous. ATRAC and CRAWL are awesome but they definitely don’t get you through sand, snow and mud.

Whew. Thanks. Now that I'm over the half century mark, my mind sometimes does it's own revisionist thing!

So we should "definitely" keep our 200's out of sand, snow and mud, right?

It should have a locker, bigger tires and a lift.

Willing to bet had I bought a badge similar to that and placed it in the same position before this lame heritage series was announced I would have been flamed.

That’s funny. Only because it’s 100 percent true!

I missed the swearing part.

Pretty interesting though. Implies they’ve probably had answer and defend their answer many times, or it probably wouldn’t get such a strong reaction.

I guess the Toyota execs haven’t dealt with situations where crawl isn’t enough...like where skinny pedal control of speed and a bit of momentum (unlike crawl-control where you give up speed-changes) is the ticket. Or where you can’t wait for sensors to detect slip and need to keep-em-all-rolling or fail.

Oh well...

Probably thrilled ARB and a Harrop. :)

I recall that comment/story from Dave. I also think the same scenario happened in the movie Gung Ho, but I haven't watched it in 20 years

So I took a closer look at the pictures Toyota posted. It’s a good looking rig, no doubt.

The badging on the rear pillar, the blacked out headlamps, and the door chrome delete all look (IMHO) awesome. Has anyone tried removing the chrome trim or blacking out the factory headlamps? If so, those are a couple mods deserving of a post.

I did notice one relatively small addition, but worth noting. It looks like the Heritage Edition comes with OEM front spacers to level out the rig. Every photo shows a level stance without a rake. Not a huge deal, but definitely a nice addition.

As expected, no significant change for 2020. I was hoping for Apple CarPlay, but it appears that won’t be coming for 2020 either.
Is this confirmed with no CarPlay? I saw that Toyota was retrofitting some 2018 models and its started to be expanded across the line. It’s almost time to move on from my 2017 and would love if the 2020 had CarPlay. My dealer has no info other than MSRP.

Doubt it. The multimedia/bluetooth is incredibly good already IMHO, even comparing to current Chrysler UConnect and Cadillac systems. It's just a bit clunky learning it, but very stable and fast to connect for my iPhone. I think the other models which are getting CarPlay are much newer infrastructure. Since it's all CANBUS, I wouldn't be surprised if the relatively ancient bones of the 200 are not getting an incremental upgrade like CarPlay. I am still in love with my 2014, and hope the 300 doesn't disappoint. I'm sure it will be great, but I'm thinking it's going to be a much lighter duty vehicle that the 200.

My personal belief is that the 200 will go down as the most desirable Land Cruiser because it's going to have old school heavy duty construction blended with modern comforts and IFS. I think the future of the vehicle is going to be redirected to a slightly lighter duty base now that there are many off-the-shelf counterparts to be used by the traditional "commercial LC customers" as a result of the strengthened and more particularly specialized military industrial complex. The 300 will probably begin debuting controversial features such as small displacement turbo engines, hybridized systems, aluminum and composite components, etc. I guess time will tell.

How would you figure out if the Heritage comes with the OEM front spacer installed? @rockcruiser915 or anyone. Thanks.

If you don't already own a 200, I would not even give the spacers any credit more than as a simply aesthetic point. The OEM suspension is simply Mercury Grand Marquis level. 100% engineered for comfort, and it actually does a pretty commendable job at that. If you are looking for ground clearance, performance in least bit, etc, aftermarket is the only way to go. Factory suspension is like riding along as coffee in someones coffee cup that they are holding up in the air as they drive down down a bumpy road, trying not to spill you. You won't get spilled, but damned if there is any firmness or control in the least bit.

Thanks. I have a FJ62 but ordering the Heritage. I just want it close to level. Will run 285/65s so don't need much clearance. Just having fun thinking about it.

I think you are right about the CarPlay. I found an apple thread that listed all the 2020 Toyota models that would feature it and Land Cruiser is not listed. I am not sure the “retro” badging is worth the price hike since I’m going to put on sliders and BP51’s anyway. I can add a lot of stuff for that extra cost.
