long overdue

well, lets get started:
the battery plate and hold down completed
i had to knotch for the throttle travel large enough to clear any engine twist or vibration.
the clearence is tight once again.
battery installed for the test fit

the RH battery tray and position.
a bit tight but works well
had to allow for clearence for the exhaust (heat and battery not good), the air cleaner and the AC lines.
this also allows for a ballance in weight distribution left and right.

positioning the emergency brake handle location.
there were 2 possibilities and although this one is tight it made the most sense.
when you go to a 5 speed tranny in a early 40 you need to either use a MAF e/brake adapter kit (which i do not like) or move the e/brake to the rear axle. since we used the 70 series disc rear the decision was made for me.

there is two things that make me sweat...
drilling into the metal for a snorkel install
and
cutting a perfectly good tub for the rubber fender extensions...

measure, test, remeasure, retest, go for coffee, come back out and remeasure and retest... then cut.

stripped, cleaned and removed
back to the beginning and the tub is off to the paint shop.

one of the things that is frustrating about working in the rurals... people work at their own speed. now because the trades i am using do very good work i have no problem waiting but i am sure it is a test on the patience of the customer.
the tub came back.

looks VERY NICE. with the black accents this is going to be a sweet-ass ride.

the axle shafts are back from Long field and their customer service is second to none. good people to deal with.
the one hub was badly worn when i went to install the outer wheel bearing race so i needed a replacement. since the older 78 style are obsolete i decided to order 2 of the 79 and newer hubs, they came in, cleaned of all grease and off to the powder coaters. he had them back to me in 2 days. now if the cutomer needs to replace a hub for any reason he can do so easily.
the newer hubs also use different rotors so i had them sent in as well.

that is all for today... more tomorrow.

the clock is ticking and i want to get this baby off to it's rightful owner while he can still enjoy the summer in it.

cheers and thanks for following along.

yep, color coded hippo liner, i have found that the hippo doesn't crack as easy as the other brands did.

Looking great Wayne !

That colour is very close to mine so I might be a bit biassed :D

Oh and thanks for the top battery clamp- idea. I will have to copy it

so yesterday and today was spent cleaning up the orignal owners wiring, it was fun since he ran all the same colored wire from the front to the back as well as some funky trailer wires.
after that was all cleaned up then we assembled the front e/locker and rear e/locker, 4 wd indicator, primary fuel filter sensor indicator and the secondary fuel filter sensor indicator.

well today we were to reinstall the tub but i wanted to install the rear bumper and tailight protective covers.
first we set the bumper on loosely and tried to install the protectors... no go. i installed the bumper at the beginning of the build and when i modified the rear protectors i held them in place and all looked well but i never tried the two together which breaks my own rule of ALWAYS test fit everything.

you can see the interference.

solution was a 3/4 X 4" flat cut drilled and welled to the side protectors.
this gave perfect clearence for the protectors as well as looked sharp under and behind the bumper. lots of protection with clearence to wash the mud out.

off to the powder coaters and should be back friday.

no work tomorrow but back at it friday so update saturday, if all goes well then the tub should be back on.

Vintage Air kits are nice to work with but the gents, although returning calls very promptly, sucked at giving advice. i had asked months ago where i could get the AC line crimped, the first tiem i called they told me blunty that any AC place can crimp the lines. bad advice since Canada uses different dyes than the US. after a couple weeks of trying different places and lots of calls i came up with nothing. so... i called them again and explained the situation so they said "send them down and we will crimp them" so that is crossing the border 2 times and the risk of loosing them.
i called last week and chatted with someone there that actually had common sense. he told me there was 4 shops in Ontario that install these kits into industrial applications and street rods and one of them must have the dyes. a few calls and bingo i hit the jackpot.

thursday i had to travel to toronto to pick up the replacement tub for the next project (2004 HZJ79 refurbish) at the same time i stopped by an old guy 2 hours away and it turned out to be a good stop. he was excellent as well as a blast to spend an hour with, the stories he told!!

so all in all Thurs was not a waste.

but as with all mods if you chnage one thing it affects others. the spacers i made for the rear bumper to clear the light surround worked well but i missed one thing. that night i went to bed and about 3AM I woke up in a cold sweat, if you want to change the bulbs with this design you will need to take off the swing out tire, the fuel cells and support, the rear bumper main and the spacer/light protectors. not a good plan.
so
this called for a removeable cross bar protection and this is what came to be.

one of the concerns of the e/locker up front is interference with the oil pan.
this is FULL compression and the e/locker motor is over 4" away from the oil pan.

no concerns here.

check back in a couple days for another update (the tub gets reinstalled tomorrow)
