i would love to know what this entails:
FSM chassis body 1980 430.webp

Both boosters I've pulled would hold vacuum for more than 24 hours... But they didn't seem to work right. But the brakes didn't work right till I replaced the M/C with an 80 Master.

I just ordered one from Amazon…

I will let you know how it goes. As long as it comes that is, there was only one available…

i can confirm the CENTRIC PARTS POWER BRAKE BOOSTER 160.88103 is a direct drop in replacement for the late 70's dual diaphragm booster. without tax, if outside of NY, it's about $215 after core swap.

EDIT: you need to transfer your check valve from old to new unit. comes with a preadjusted M/C push rod. also need to transfer your clevis and locknut.

Ive got a after market set up on my 72' FJ40, I used a 94 4runner BB and MC (150$ BB and 60$ for . I used a spacer plate to correct the rod lenght diffrence. Bolt pattern matched up perfectly and the 2 lines matched up as well. Here is my problem, after a few trips the gym or a good drive around town, the rear tends to start to hold pressure and the pedal that used to go almost to the floor is stopping instantly. Eventualy They all hold so tight i can bearly move. To fix this ive been releasing the pressure at the MC and everthing works fine after that. Now this is not a daily driver and its not much more then a Go to the Gym/Store truck so its not really been a big issue on my radar. But id love some ideas or thoughts on what might be the issue and maybe it will help yall out. Ill post some pictures when I get home if you like.

Oh and yes i have check that the rod from the pedal is not keeping pressure on the MC, when all the way up it is free floating.

I will check again, but im about 99% sure that the rod comes completely off MC, There is a spring on the pedal and pulls it up. I can push the pedal and i can feel when the rod starts to touch the MC.

I adjusted the rod again when I got home and took for a spin. Ill drive it next few days see if happends again. Thanks for the info guys.

I also discovered that the booster I just took out of my rig is a Cardone 53-2450. That means this particular unit will bolt into the vehicle without any modification...however, I checked a few places online, and they all say out of stock.

yeah i dont think the cardone is available anymore. and you will want to paint the centric before install. rusts very quickly.

That's absolutely a great tip. Take a look at the Cardone unit on my car. It's all covered in rust. When I get the new one, I will POR-15 it. Another lesson I learned is to spend the money on an Aisin-made Master Cylinder. The aftermarket ones just aren't of the same quality. When it leaks, brake fluid can get into the booster, and boosters are expensive.

Going to order this and check it out. Looks like the OEM one.
I ordered this booster, got it last week...it is exact in every way, even comes with a new grommet for the check valve! I have already painted it, it does come bare metal. You have to ante up $155 core charge up front...just send your old booster back for a refund. You have to email them for an RMA number. Sent mine back Friday. This is a great find at a great price for our '40s!

Parts Geek now has one left in stock. $197. Not bad. On eBay same for $450.

If you do a search for centric 160.88103, you may find one. Some places say special order, so they may be able to get Centric to build a few and supply one to you.

Damn, the rebuilt Centric Booster I recently put in is making a leaking sound like a balloon letting out air when the brake pedal is depressed.

Is the booster bad, or is there something that can possibly be tightened or adjusted? I'd hate to do this job all over again!

The only change done to the vehicle is that I rebuilt the carb and replaced all the vacuum lines. Did I just sealed up all the other vacuum leaks, thus exaggerating what must have been a pre-existing condition? (The booster always exhibited a slight hissing sound)
