Still improving the rig. Something I noticed is that my gear box is consistently overfull and my transaxle is consistently underfull.

I add as necessary, but I gotta think there is some oil being swapped in between them and this indicates something that can be fixed.

Any ideas?
This is a known issue on these trucks and has been for years. There's a fix somewhere I'm sure but I can't remember it at the moment.
Specter at one point offered a set of fill plugs which connected via a rubber tube, to equalize the levels, but I can't say that's a great solution either.
I've been adjusting the levels manually.
Gotta love that gear oil smell, I can't get enough of it!

If it’s like the 60 - which also has this problem - it’s a seal on the output shaft of the transmission that protrudes into the transfer case. It goes bad and the fluids start mixing, with the transmission overfilling and the transfer case getting low. Getting to the seal requires complete disassembly of the transfer case and removing the input gear off the shaft. So you’re in it for a transfer case rebuild at that point.

The two other solutions are:
1. Check it religiously and add/subtract fluid as necessary
2. The aforementioned bypass hose. Cruiser Outfitters and other places sell it, and there’s a guy n the small business section of the classifieds who makes them too. The risk here is that once installed you might tend to ignore the problem, and if it gets worse or the hose stops doing it’s job, you can run the transfer case dry.

Logically, the transfer case running dry should only affect 4x4 operation, right?

If so, sounds like a nothing burger as long as I check it prior to anticipated off road operations.
Seriously? What turns the rear end the rest of the time?

@mrboatman @thatcabledude That’s exactly who I was thinking of when I mentioned the person in the Small Business forum. Thanks for coming through on that.

@120mm The transfer case has high and low gearing, the driveshafts are attached to it … those gears are spinning all the time no matter what.

Yeah, I had my head in my fifth point of contact on that.
Some days it takes a while for my last two brain cells to sputter to life, warm up, and then start rubbing together. They happened to be warmed up tonight, but that isn’t usually the case. All good.

I had been planning a visit to Gillettes Trading Post
Gillette's Trading Post - Google Search - https://g.co/kgs/dfS4QxE in Saguache Colorado on the way back from our Route 66 trip. Terry Gillette is a fellow veteran I served with back in the day and he rescues vintage jeeps.

Unfortunately, we weren't able to make it, but a beloved uncle passed away yesterday, and his funeral is in Northwest Iowa, which is about halfway.

So, I am heading out tomorrow early with my good boy Charley, and after the funeral we are going to visit Terry.

My family has also rescued a 1920s ballroom in Storm Lake Iowa and we plan to visit that as well. More updates later.

Sorry to hear about your family member passing. When you’re in Saguache you should see if that Toyota Stout is still sitting on 285 on the south end of town.

That is amazing.

Maybe I can use some local knowledge to get more info on it.

I happened across your buddy’s place some years back. Lotta cool stuff. Bunch of FCs.

I too registered that Jeep place in my brain as I passed through Saguache last month. Those Forward Controls are so cool and I would 1000% drive one. I respect the flat fenders too. A Willys wagon isn't the worst substitute for an FJ28 either ... especially when comparing prices and parts availabilities.

In full disclosure, I was born and raised in Toledo, where Willys was from. They still make all the Wranglers there. I won't go so far as to say I like Jeeps on the whole, but it was kind of "in the water" growing up, so I have respect for some of it.

I think one of the Classic Cruisers mechanics is eyeballing that Stout for his personal collection ... as if he needs a third one haha. Poncha Springs isn't that far from Saguache, so he was already aware of it when I told him.
