How do you keep from getting paint on the weatherstripping?

Back tape the entire vehicle. I'm sure it will be a full day just in taping.

Extremely time consuming, but really the only way to get a consistent exteterior color. The entire exterior has to be sprayed all at the same time.

Good day on the lv today, although I didn't try that hard. Pretty nice day out today and kinda felt lazy as I was working on it.

I had to sandblast a couple parts first of all in the morning, specificlly the bracket that holds the coolant bottle and the wiper fluid bottle. After that geared up and sprayed some epoxy primer and single stage on a few parts that had to be black......Including someone else's brake booster ;)

I then kinda putzed around on the fron clip. I started looming up all my wires since I don't plan on being back in the front bib area for a while, that actually took a while although it doesn't look like much. Started bolting the aprons back on with new rubber and clips from Cruiserdan :) .

I actually unbolted the tailgate again, but no pics. I was going to go after those hinges with the grinder, but decided I'm going to bring them into the local highschool tomorrow. The highschool machine shop can mill off about .070" off that back side of each hinge. That way it will look nice and be extremely uniform and flat across the mounting surface.

As usual, very good job, hope mine comes out 1 / 16 as nice.

I just looked at your thread, that thing looks sweet!

I was thinking the same thing about mine after looking at yours

Great job.which you have probably been told many times,I had a front early model grill with the light tubs but you found one the same day and talked to you briefly on the phone. outstanding effort , dave

Not much done on the lv tonight. Took down those parts I painted black the other day and bolted them back up, but nothing worth taking pics of.

On another note, a little question and answer time as I pick the brains here of fellow 45er's and others.

1st pic: Fuel tank sending unit out of the lv. Reading empty to half full on the 79 FJ40 speedo head. Not sure if it's not calibrated to a 79 speedo head or shot. It was pretty crusty when I took it out. Question is: Same bolt pattern as a 40 sending unit?

2nd pic: Rubber piece that goes between the lv window frame and door (underneath the vent window area) Any ideas?

3rd pic: Trim/Weatherstripping pieces that snap into the inside door/window area. Ideas?

Thanks in advance, Matt

Looks great Matt. The wiring looks like its coming together also.

Thanks Gary, wiring pretty is pretty much all done. Still have to wire loom it up, but that's about it. That might happen after exterior paint.

Your project X looks awesome also, that is one badass rig

I dont think the early sender will work with the later cluster.
On the early gauge, the needle goes to full with the key off (same
as the temp). Later gauge works reverse.... You might need to
adapt a later sender into the tank...

I have a set of OEM 79 FJ40 ones I can measure and maybe they will be close or trimable?

And that black looks real nice:D

Get me a close up, I think I have something that is near perfect. I need pics of them with a rule next to it.

1) you can move the wires on coil around on pick up to change the reading, but too complex to explain not showing one being done in person

2) I was planning on using a portion of fj40 fiberglass to metal hard top weather-strip

3) felts were made from a fj55 rear door felt cut 40/60 for one front and one rear door, don't know what to do now. exterior wiper was to be a late 1980's mini truck cut down. There were two styles, w/ vent window and without -find the ones with they are longer. A volvo one was really cool, but reaaaallly expensive used at wrecking yards

Matt,
Check out this link for a 66? FJ45 LWB that is available for sale. Not sure if it is what you are looking for. Also, maybe too far away for you. I saw this truck in person about 3 weeks ago, but didn't have my camera with me. If I had the $$$ I would probably own this truck.

It is about as rust free as you could ever hope to find. I didn't see any rust on it at all, but I wasn't looking at it like I was buying it. It has lived its whole life in Central Texas. IIRC it has been updated with a 2F and front disc brakes. It needs some work, but would be an excellent starting point. He is asking $8K for it. Daniel (the owner) has owned this truck for years and knows all of its history. You can find his phone # on MUD by searching for Wimberley.

However, you may be looking for one that is a little rusty to present more of a challenge.

I'm using a '77 FJ40 fuel sender with a '65 FJ45 instrument cluster. The bolt pattern on the '77 sender matches a '65-ish tank. The tank may not be a '65, but it has no emission lines of any sort on it, so it's pretty close. You may need to bend/adjust the float arm to get a proper 'full' and 'empty' reading.

I had heard for years that a late model sender wasn't compatible and tried this on a whim, and it has worked fine for a year so far.

Sorry it took me so long to reply, it has been way to long ;) Spring came fast here and I've had to put in some long hard hours at work. Time I've got home the last couple days has been past 10 pm and I've been shot. So haven't had anytime to work on the lv, let alone check the thread. Anyway, managed to get a couple hours tonight.

I had the local highschool mill off .070" of each face of the hinge, which obviously lowers my tailgate .140", which is a little over an 1/8". Got them back today and tried them out, worked perfect. Dropped my tailgate that little bit I needed and now the upper tailgate clears fine. I will have to blast the hinges and re-prime and paint, but no big deal.

Wanted to toss the hood on tonight. White is an extremly difficult color to spray base-clear on, you can never see where the clear is. I know it's a tad anal retentive, but I color sanded and buffed the inside of my hood. It had a little orange peel to it and I wanted it smooth, so that took a while. Couple pics of the hood bolted back on.

I thought I remembered that I might have a sending unit some where? I had ordered one of those poly tanks from CCOT about 3 year ago and I got a free sending unit with that. It took a little digging, but I found it. I hooked up the sending unit wires and it went from empty to full and back again, seems to work fine. I had to slightly modify the holes and drill one new one, but other than that, bolts right in now. I did have to shorten the float arm to match the orginal one out of the lv, the other one was about an inch to long.

I'm hoping tomorrow to start installing the latch mechs and a couple other things, keep trying to get closer to full paint.
