Keeping the three speed? If not, that BH is useless to you anyway..

True, but they are fairly easy to find..

Update?

You digging up bones Mark?

It has been slow in the 40 section for a while.

I saw the motor for sale in the classifieds, and it reminded of the initial thread. Came back to see what was on the motor originally. ;)

Yes, the locked up F engine is for sale. I do have a potential buyer lined up for it and other F related stuff I will not be using. I was actually about to post an update. Not much of one, but some progress. I am back in WA to visit family for Christmas so I am gonna get some more stuff done. Found a complete 3F-E for a great price. Included the exhaust manifolds, intake/TB/injectors/etc, distributor, and the engine harness. Pulled the head off, very clean, no sludge at all. Gonna sell the 3F short block and now hunting for a 2F shortblock. Getting frame sandblasted will be the next step. Gonna keep it all Toyota as I am gonna hunt for an H41.

When it comes to transmission choice, I have returned to wishy-washyness. I am tempted to stay from my Toyota purity (was pretty much sold on locating an H41) and look into an SM465. I love that 6.95 1st gear. I especially love the cost of an SM465 vs an H41. I am for sure using the original 3speed transfer case. I have read many of the tech write ups on SM465 swaps. The H41 seems to be an easier swap. Considering I have 3 other Toyota projects of various magnitude going on (1 pickup, 2 4Runners), I like easier. I always welcome thoughts and input.

Need to add some info, I want to be able to use the PTO winch. I am assuming I could use the port on the 465 for that.

I really liked the SM420 on my '73, basically a 3-speed to 3.5-speed swap-rarely used first gear on the Chevy Apache box. I somewhat still question the amount of shaft spline engagement that linked the two. But, friends don't encourage friends to do swaps, we just help you complete them.

Depends on where you’re going to drive it. On road, the 465 is a bit clunky- compared to any modern box. The gear spacing is not that refined. Offroad, they’re awesome- stout and the first gear is ideal for getting over rocks. And they’re cheap. For a short period I owned a ‘78 and as I recall it was a better on the road.
I love my SM465 when I get to the trail. On the highway, I dream of a fifth gear. But it works and I can’t afford the NV4500 and adapter....

It will see some general cruising time, but most of the pavement time will be driving to and from trails - that could mean 15 minutes on the road (forest service roads are just a couple miles away, but they are well graded for the most part and only require 4WD during snow season) to 4+ hr one way to a trail. Smooth shifts don't concern me - it's a 1965 FJ40, not a 2017 2WD Tacoma. The clunkiness is part of the charm of an old Cruiser.
The reason for my waffling is I found a guy selling 2 SM465s for $150, 4WD, 10 spine output shafts. Hard to pass that up.

For what it is worth, I run a H41 / 3sp case in my '65 which I wheel alot and there are times I wish 1st was lower

Oh I know that, from what I was reading you cannot use the transfer case driven PTO if running an SM465

If you buy a ‘long’ adapter from Advanced Adapter you will have a spud shaft that should accommodate the PTO gear.

I have both transmissions sitting in my garage, SM465 and a H42 connected to 3sp xfer case. To me it looks like the SM would hang down lower than the H42 decreasing ground clearance. Dunno, just looks that way.

I would buy the trannies, but you might find it cheaper still- GM used a lot of these over the years 1/2 - 1 tons. I really like my SM465 on the trails, the low 1st is worth the clunkiness. On the street it’s not bad at all, I was just letting you know how it seems. With 35’s it’s not screaming to loud, but I have the itch for a 5speed. I’ll never be satisfied...

The project took an unexpected turn in the last couple weeks (in a good way). It prompted me to make a trip to the beautiful PacNW on short notice.
I'll have some good info and pics to post in a month or so. Exciting stuff.

The major change of plans is ditching the 2F-E in favour of a 2UZ-FE.
The maddening part now is transmission research. Long term I'd like to install an H55f. However due to juggling multiple build projects, I'm gonna do a 4 speed for now. Found an H42Long for a price I can't turn down. If I set everything up for the H42L, then an H55f can be a relatively straight forward swap down the road.
