Yeah, regarding speed, I’ve had some great helpers the last few weeks.

Enjoy it brother, they grow up and are gone way too fast. My youngest is married and on the other side of the country now. I remember when he was 3 and would sit beside me banging on my FJ40 bumper with open end wrenches while I worked on it.

Carpet update. So spoke to the upholstery guy. He said never seen that material before. He does believe it was the carpet, not the floor mats. They might have been the same thing:). Either way, if I chase down a sewable material, he said he would make a set for me with the snaps, etc. for the front, middle and rear. He gave me the numbers of some places to call to try and find the oem style. I'm on the hunt, but bearish in regards to success. So looking at some carpet back ups. I have a couple carpets that get close. It appears the closest carpet weave is a gros point style. Anyone have any other thoughts to a carpet material that could look good snapped to the floor of this old girl. no worries, just fishing. thanks

So he thinks it’s just carpet that’s been worn down to the base material? I haven’t seen any of it first hand but that’s not what it looks like in the photos.

As far making a new carpet, SOR already offers a carpet kit for the LV (I have it installed and pretty happy with it) so I’m not sure if it’s worth your time to go down that road for carpet. I think it would be cool if it was some kind of floor mat like it appears to be though. But I suppose we would all need to a) feel confident about what the mats originally were and b) be able to find that kind of material for it to be worth your time and everyone’s expense. If it really was originally carpet I think folks might as well just get the SOR kit. Just my $0.02.

He called it carpet, but Your right, it is definitely floor mat material. I also agree with your recommendation. Also great feedback and appreciate the advice. I agree there appears to be easier options, but I am rarely smart enough to take advantage of them. :) also, no pressure or expectation for any of you to join my on this fools errand, I’m just sharing as much of my journey as I can between spinning the plates. I’ll try to keep learning and share as I go.

We appreciate the effort! These original LV pieces are gold, and I understand how difficult it is trying to preserve and reproduce this kind of thing. I’m definitely in for a set if we can find something similar to the original floor mat material.

Hello, going to the upholstery guy this trying to convince him to make me a set of snap in covers for the front, middle and rear mats. did your cover have snaps in it?. doesn't look like, but pics can be tricky. Thoughts? thank you,
no it didnt have the snaps. i would like to have some kind of securing points, but wont be putting any holes in my new floor..maybe velcro tabs?

i can get the black pyramid stuff here by the metre. It is the same as the side step material on 40's so you will be able to get it in white too

Thank you and yeah, in hindsight probably should have switched it. I guess I just need to wear this version out sooner and do it differently on the next set. :)

that is an easy fix with a trip to the tire store. just swap sides so white letters are on inside. done. looking great.

Copy that. Just thought of putting holes in a new floor brings tears to my eyes. I wonder if they could sew and some magnets in the corners and out on the ends? Then you won’t have any adhesive on your floor either. Just a thought.

Thanks for the heads up on that. I’m trying to bird-dog that material here, and currently 0-6. Would you be willing to share a link that I could use for reference? No worries

Is this what you’re looking for? Pyramid Vinyl Matting - Canal Rubber

That looks great!

Some rare earth / neodymium magnets are a great idea. Very strong, pretty cheap, you can buy them as “washers” so they’re easy to sew into place too.

This may just over-complicate things but just for brainstorming Discussion one time when I had a mat made I had some foil insulation material put on the bottom side and was pretty surprised at the difference it made keeping the heat off the floor. Of course I live in Phoenix where it’s 104F today so others probably don’t care as much :)

I think that some thermal insulation would be great in any climate! i would totally add it to floor mats for my LV.

Maybe we should think about pulling this floor mat repro into it's own thread?

Thats' a great idea. It is starting to take a life of its own. I am learning more about these mats each day. I am going to show my ignorance, what is the best way to create it's own thread? I see the tread starter, but the button doesn't allow me to do anything. I am sure it's user error, for sure.

Go to the main heading for "FJ45 Owners Club". On that page, which is where all the various threads are listed, look on the top right and you will see an Orange icon that says "Post thread". Click that and you will be starting a new thread.

copy that. Any way and can cut and paste the current seat conversation? Or do we start brand new? thank you

I would just copy and paste the link to this thread, and then start with a short summary and maybe paste some of the photos in. Some of us can help pasting the photos if you like once the thread is started. Title it something like “gauging interest in factory reproduction FJ45LV floor mats”
