At the time, I was working out of my mom’s basement, working on one truck at a time, maybe building a motor here and there. We were actually closer in time to the original trip to The Very Large Array than we are to Nolen’s current, real time visit.

This is the trip that would change the trajectory of history…

There is so much to unpack in this picture.

We are rocking along at a snail’s pace toward the obvious solution

As you can tell by the direction that the array is broadcasting, indeed things are cooking.

Today we are baking primer and paint with the smudge pot:

We had it at full boil for a minute, but it was just too much

We turned down the fire and the paint melted itself into a smooth finish

Rotunda has been getting a little love lately, but not nearly enough attention here in the thread. She went for a weekend spa retreat to get rid of all the fab & grinder dust. Then she rolled back into the shop to be reunited with RoboCop:

We then dressed her up with her newly ceramic coated downpipe and installed the rest of the exhaust…

There was trouble in paradise though. When tightening up the exhaust manifold, one of the studs pulled its threads out. Closer investigation revealed a previous repair using a helicoil and the threads were just the helicoil itself coming apart.

Not wanting to go back with a helicoil, we ordered up a Timesert and Bigsert kit (in case the smaller timesert wasn’t enough meat)

This was nerve wracking doing my first timesert on the motor like this, so we did not stop to take pictures. We did find these stunt doubles to stand in though…

Step one, drill for the tap:

Next, use the countersink bit so the timesert will sit flush or below:

Then tap for the insert:

Finally, install the timesert with the install tool:

It turns out that helicoil and timeserts use the same size thread repair pitch so we were able to re-use the helicoil threads in the head (sans helicoil). They were in good shape, so we went straight to the counterbore and then installed the insert.

Finished product (also a stunt double):

With that out of the way, we bolted up the alternator & water pump so we could put the belts on. This is when I found out that the water outlet cut ‘n turn interfered with the alternator. I could get it in there, but it had no room to move.

After a mild heart attack, a solution presented itself that will require an unmolested water outlet, and will probably end up being a better setup.

We threw the belts on anyway because it still looked hawt:

Of course, you gotta line up the Mitsuboshi logos:

You’ll also notice the block off plate for the heater pipe. This is a race truck, so we are running the essentials only. No heater pipes or hoses.

We’re running silicone block off caps for the ports in the back of the head. We’ll cut them down to size before they are permanent

We needed to secure the PS pressure line running under the motor from the pump to the hydroboost unit.

Some cut down bar stock with drilled & tapped ends made a perfect standoff that mounts to one of the radiator pipe mounting studs:

I really wanted to see the belts tightened up, so I pulled the water outlet out of the way. The uncut outlet arrived today, and the fix will probably involve taking a pizza and beer to the machine shop.
