What about options for shaving the 14 bolt?
Do you think the Ballistic shave kit is worth it?
Why did you cut both sides?
Oh yeah, my thought was to match the stock FJ60 axle width of 57" but I have 2" wheel spacers on the front and rear now so it makes sense to swap the left and right sides to keep the axle 63" and not have to run wheel spacers on the rear anyway.
The 14 bolt bible on Pirate says the axle tubes are 0.5" thick but mine measures 0.305". After doing some searching it seems like many people have 14 bolt axles that the tubes are not 0.5". Just in case you are putting too much faith in reading that bible.
Sorry for the delayed response. Been a bit crazy lately and haven't been on in a while.
For the 14 Bolt I found that the long side (passenger) shaft on a factory axle is right about 6" longer than the factory short side (driver). For the housing to be offset and re-use the factory shafts, the long side now has to accommodate a shaft that is 6" shorter and the short side now has to accommodate a shaft that is 6" longer.
For my setup I measured 4" back from the back of the backing plate flange on the short side and 10" from the flange on the long side. Swap the tubes side to side and the shafts will swap over no problem.
Ordered a Yukon Grizzly locker today.
As long as the parts show up in a reasonable time frame (tomorrow would be good) things will go together quickly.
My brother is coming out for Thanksgiving and wants to go wheeling so I hope to have the new axle ready to go by then. I am afraid that if I hammer on the FJ60 axle I will brake another axle shaft and I don't have any spares to fix it.
Still need some brake parts, drive shaft lengh will change, antiwrap bar mount to the 14 bolt. I am working on the sleeves for putting the axle tubes back on now.
Still think that the 14 bolt axle shaft isn't that much bigger than the FJ60 axle shaft so this better be worth it!
and i can promise you sir that the 14bolt shafts are infinitely stronger than your yota's are

The 14 bolt is definitely stronger, if not bigger. The shafts may be similar in size to the stock 60 shaft but the 14b is a Full Floating axle, not semi floating, so the shaft doesn't need to be as big in the first place. Not to mention the huge hub flange bolts, massive ring gear, etc.
This is a much stronger axle.
a 14 bolts shafts are not similar in size to a stock LC shaft. The LC shafts seem to be beefier because the major diameter is so huge, but that adds nothing to the overall strength of the shaft. You will be fine on a stock 14 bolt shaft for a very long time.
FF vs SF really has to do with load capacity, not twisting strength of the shaft.
Stock D60 shafts have nothing on a 14 bolt shaft.
