100 series Windshield Replacement Question: OEM vs. After Market Glass

Thought I would update this thread. I just got a price from Toyota for the windshield alone it's $1076. That doesn't include trim or other parts, just the glass. I didn't believe him so I called another dealer and he quoted me the same price. I asked the parts guy his thoughts and he said that he wouldn't spend that money if it was his truck. I'm in CA so I don't think insurance will cover it like other states.

Non OEM prices with install are about $230- $330. I'm just going to try and find someone reputable. I found out who the dealership uses for glass and might have them install PPK or Plinkington glass for me.

Question, can they reuse the Rivets or should I buy some spare parts for the installers? Will the installers have rivets or screws? Can I get just the rivets or do I need to buy new trim as well?

I had one replaced, just call your insurance company and see who they recommend. You don't need to buy anything took the guy 45 minutes in my driveway, with me talking to him.

Here in Texas I WOULD NOT use who my insurance recommends, but I have coverage and expect them to use the cheapest person they can find or have an agreement with. The damage should be covered under your comprehensive insurance, it'd be the same if a piece of debris hit your headlight and hood for example (if you have comprehensive).

I wouldn't use aftermarket on my LX, it's worth the piece of mind for me knowing it fits properly, some aftermarkets are slightly different than OEM in terms of fit. And it's a structural component of the vehicle when installed properly. All that and I'd find a guy that has experience with 100s, if you have to chase down parts for someone, that's not a good sign. I'm sure there are some guys out here that can make an aftermarket work well, but its prob not the average installer.

Replaced mine 2 years ago with Safelight (I think), $100 deductible. It is Pilkington, but I have had no issues and didn't require parts for installer. I know some have had issues with wind noise, but I have had no problems. Unfortunately, another rock hit the PS and needs to be replaced again...

I had mine replaced 3 months ago. Installer used Pilkington, which is just fine with me. He came with the correct rivets in a sealed bag with the correct Toyota pn and replacement moldings, as well as a rivet tool which worked perfectly. Local guy who does the glass for Lexus in Boise.

He noted most important part of installation was to make sure all existing adhesive was removed, and that did take him a while.

Result was same as before he got there...no wind noise, no water leakage after 3 trips to the car wash and 20 minutes of power washing I did a week later, just to make sure there were no drips.

Thought I would update this, I had to change out my windshield due to shattered glass. Insurance was not an option.

I tried to use the guys the Toyota dealership uses, but seems that they don't care much for doing work outside the dealership. They never returned my calls.

I moved on to Safelite. I told them ahead of time it was a very difficult install and they needed to send somebody good. The installer seemed informed about the rivets and had done LC's before. Long story short it wound up taking 3 trips from Safelite to finally get the glass in properly. Downside is that it took a while, upside is that they are very good about coming out until you are happy. I had them come out when while my car was at work so it was easy for me.

Total bill was $300 with new wipers.

Is the wind noise referenced sound like a higher pitched humming noise? Noticed in my 06 inget that type of noise when driving at higher speeds. Goes away if I crack the drivers side window. Wondering if my windshield has been replaced with a less than adequate install?

Paid $228 for safelite replacement today, previously had a Pilkington, new windshield was not the same. Amazing how much pitting was on my old windshield. Now I need to get it tinted.

Just replaced my windshield on my '05 yesterday. Luckily I live in Massachusetts, which has no-deductible windshield replacement. The insurance company initially wouldn't pay for Toyota glass because of the age of the vehicle, but the installer that I used said their aftermarket glass suppliers didn't have the green tint available. They got the ok to use Toyota glass, and $1,750 later (all on the insurance company's dime) it's as good as new.

I called my dealer to ask who they use for glass replacement and I was directed to a great mom and pop shop that had Land Cruiser experience and they did a great job.

I have a 2000 LC with the original windshield on it.

The windshield has a few small chips in it and hundreds of tiny ones that look like dust particles speckled all over it that's really visable when driving into the sun. I'd like to get it replaced.

My local dealership quotes a replacement for about $900, parts and labor. (makes me feel like puking)

If I remember correctly, C-Dan said he could get the glass for about $350, plus $100 or so shipping to California. But he said that shipping is a pain, and it may even crack during the shipping.

I found www.windshield.net that can install a replacement at my home for $256, or $165 for just the glass and molding.

My question is whether an OEM windshield is that much better than an after market windshield? I know the dealership asked if I wanted bronze glass or green glass, so I assume that the OEM glass is tinted for the LC.

Would anyone have any experience with any of the services that come to install an aftermarket windshield at your home, or the quality of glass?

Thanks

-Kalen

Any of you guys that have used screws on the windshield trim are you experiencing rust yet?

The PO replaced my windshield with pilington glass and used screws so I do not know how long its been in there. This is what I have now.

I had mine replaced yesterday at safelite, they used screws. Now I'm worried. Workmanship looks good though so I just done know.

From my understanding talking to a private one man windshield shop in buisiness for 30 years who fixes windshields at 2 local toyota dealers so they can then sell the cars, said these LC are a "pain in the a$$" along with the FJ cruiser but the LC is worse.

He told me that since screws where used it would be OK as long as the metal was properly treated and then a sealant of sorts was applied to the screw.

The factory uses a plastic rivet which is good but from what I could gather from him talking it still could possibly get moisture underneath on a factory windshield.

many people will tell you to get aftermarket, but will then reduce a vehicle's value if it has non-oem glass. it's one or the other. either you want it to look original or you want to save few $$. i too keep a $100 comp deduct on our LX's insurance becuase the glass is sooooo outrageous to replace. it was $8XX a few months ago at the lexy dealer. it looks like original and they used a real toyota trim kit.

my $0.02

I'll have to disagree with that. I've been buying and selling cars for 7 years and not once has a single person made a comment about non factory glass.

A cracked windshield would affect values. but that's it, and not by much.

Buy a box of the correct rivets and replace the screws. My trim were put in using screws from sometime before I bought my cruiser. Pulled screws, smeared some 3M body sealer on the proper plastic-coated rivet, installed rivets, done.

I will add my experience to this. I used a company call Abra Glass, they have locations around the country.

I have State Farm insurance, who only wanted to use aftermarket glass, not factory. Abra has it in their system that only factory parts should be used. State Farm took the advice. It took a little back and forth but we got it done. I even had two installers on it. They didn’t mess around. It came out perfect.

I’m having my windshield replaced by Safelite as we speak. The windshield had been replaced by the previous owner and it’s not OEM glass. I was having some water come in at the top right hand side and now I know why.The windshield was barely sealed at the top. No rust anywhere thank god.

Hey everyone, after looking at the FSM for my 05 LC trying to figure out which parts would make the most sense to order to make sure the windshield installer does it right. I’m a little OCD and my current windshield has some bulges along the side, not to mention the chips in the windshield.

I’m thinking the Outside No.2 Moulding on both sides, possibly the outside upper mouldingd and the rivers of course.

Any thoughts?

After looking at my current windshield, previous installer used screws which I’m sure are contributing to the wind noise.

It is supposed to be rivet instead of screws. It will cause wind noise and potential leak.

The problem with the screws is that they are 1/4 inch (usually) sheet metal screws, rather than the 1/8" rivets, so you kind of lose the ability to use the rivets properly once some dip**** uses screws on it. Ask me how I know.
