Alright I thought I would share the evolution of our newly aqcuired LC into our new and improved RV tow car.

Our family enjoys camping, well by the standards of most people here it’s hardly camping, we have a great motor home and tow car, which allows us to spend anywhere from 6 to 16 weeks a year camping as a family. We have 3 kids (5, 2 and 3 weeks). As a result of the latest addition, it’s time we upgrade from our current tow car to something bigger that can accommodate 3 car seats.

We’ve enjoyed the CR-V as it’s handled some light off road action and has been a good car, currently has a 1.5” OME lift and rear spacers to level out the ride.

While we haven’t yet parted ways with the Honda it is time to get started on the next project.

After some research and time spent on Mud we determined the LC to be a good option for the next tow car. (I know some will say flat towing a LC behind a motor home isn’t worth the risks, but there didn’t seem to be lots of other options available).

After some research I figured out they make tow bars for model years 99 - 03, but figured Toyota didn’t change the frame for model years 04 - 07 so pretty much any year would work. I wanted something newer than 03 to get the 5spd transmission and wasn’t worried as much about the mileage as this would be a 3rd car. I wanted something with a decent service history and was hoping to spend less than $10k if possible.

So here goes.

First the baseline of where the Honda got us.

I’ve actually already gone through 1 LC in the process. Found an 05 with 42k miles, but it was to nice to simply drag behind a motor home. Luckily the wife was nice enough to allow the purchase of a second LC before the first was even gone.

Enter the LC tow car, another 05 with 255k on the clock, acquired in Las Vegas. Service records show probably 3 PO’s the last two living in Las Vegas. For some reason the Toyota service records show the dealer services for the first 5 years, but don’t list the servicing dealership, so it’s hard to know where it started it’s life.

The interior was in good shape, granted it didn’t drive or feel like the 05 with 42k, but i guess that’s what 210k miles will do to a car. TB service was done at 211k, so that was a plus.

Here is a shot of the two cars for the limited time we had both.

So now the baselining begins.

Wash and wax
Differential flushes - done
Transmission flush - haven’t found the best thread on getting all the ATF fluid out, I’m don’t really wan to just drain the transmission pan.
Oil Change
Air Filter - done

Some other house keeping items on the list
Passenger front door lock actuator - done
Speaker grills - done
Telescoping steering wheel motor replacement - the new motor has arrived, just haven’t gotten around to it yet. Installed and had the dealer disable the auto tilt on start to try and prolong it's life.
New OEM steering wheel on order. - OEM was pricey, so got one from a salvage yard instead, still much improved.

Plus had to order lots of odds and ends
Floor mats - done
Rear cargo mat - looking for OEM, but they don’t make it any more - Salvage yard came through again.
Headphones for the rear entertainment system - done
New tires - arriving tomorrow, BFG AT KO2’s, done, looks great.

Added a USA-Spec Bluetooth adapter seems to work great, but somehow the microphone cord got unplugged reinstalling the radio, so I’ll have to tear everything apart again.

Also got around to installing the Blue Ox tow bar on Saturday. Install went well, still waiting for tail light wiring kit to arrive before wrapping everything up.

Doesn’t look to bad, might even be able to get an aftermarket bumper on there in the future.

While the skid plate was off, I thought I’d replace the foam. The old foam was holding up well given it’s age and the almost non-existent moisture in Las Vegas.

Also while I was cleaning things on Saturday, thought it would be a good idea to clean out the front fender wells. I could see little pine needles sticking out. Man was there a ton of leave in there.

What do you need to do to the driveline for flat towing? Transfer case and transmission in neutral? Do they have oil slingers to prevent damage? Or do you have to add an oiling system?

I don't know anything about flat towing a LC.

From all the research I’ve done, transfer case in N, transmission in P, key in the ignition so the steering wheel doesn’t lock and it’s ready to go.

Shouldn’t have any issues with the fluids or temps.

Have towed my '07 LX over 5,000 miles no issues. Transmission in Park, T-Case in Neutral, turn ignition off but leave key in so as to keep steering column from locking. Tows great. Very easy to install Air-Force 1 braking system.

Also added cabin air filters. The LC didn’t have the door, so had to replace that as well. Took about an hour following the directions on Mud.

Not as dirty as I expected give how much debris came out of the fender wells.

Used the opportunity to spend some more time underneath. This of course just adds items to the to do list.

Both motor mounts are definitely shot.

Transmission mount looks pretty good, but my guess is I’ll do this one as well just for peace of mind.
