I picked up a used Sears X-cargo Extreme for a good price on CL this summer. I think it's 16-18 cubic feet. We used it for a few long trips in the fall and holiday break. We are a family of six (4 teenagers) and that cargo box holds a lot of junk.

Yakima space booster off Craigslist. Won't do road trips without it. I have 3 kids and a dog and it's much nicer to get all the cargo on top and behind the rig. Stays completely dry, aerodynamic, and is lockable.

Another vote for the Sears XCargo. Holds a ton - family of six and we couldn’t travel without it. I have the 15 and 20 cu. ft. versions.

I have thule xxl box as well as a rear hitch carrier with a 50 dollar cargo bag. I much prefer the rear hitch carrier for ease of access. the xxl thule box and unfortunately it hits the rear whale tail. if I push the cargo box too far forward, it bounces up and down while underway. My guess is aftermarket thule bars would raise the cargo box and fix this problem.

Would it still be a problem without the spoiler?

I took the spoiler off, but my wife prefers the whale tale look. The problem is I have an XXL box, and the newer LX 470 roof bars were shifted further back. My 01 LC roof bars can be shifted farther forward. I could prob retrofit an older roof mount on the LX, but would lose the body colored roof rack. the struggle...

Yeah the Sears XL is good. You win any beauty contests with it, but it's functional and way cheaper than other models. The thing I would like to change, is that it isn't side opening. But with that said, the tailgate is perfect for standing on for loading and unloading, so no extra step stool or anything.

Thule XL fits nicely next to a 35Q Cooler. Blade-style fairing clears just fine. Only issue I have is the box is designed for cross-bars and doesn't play nice with the flat rack. Front bottom is scalloped to increase volume and reduce drag for front cross bar but it means it doesn't sit flat. I prop up the box on some wood to level it out before I strap it down. You can barely see it in the first picture.

Roof top boxes are awesome, keeps our gear clean and gives us room to carry our dogs and passengers in complete comfort!

positives of the thule... You can install or remove in 5 minutes. you can open it from either side. It can handle speeds of 80++ MPH.

I will also say that when its loaded up, it significantly moves your center of gravity upwards. The truck definitely feels more tippy. I had this same problem on my toyota minivan.

with a family of 5, soon to be 6, Im looking to buy a travel trailer

If you're patient (or rather don't need one right away), keep an eye on CL. They do show up on there from time to time on the cheap. Picked up this hardly-used Thule for $125. It's awesome—incredibly easy on and off (literally 1000x easier than my old Thule box with carriage bolts and clamps). The only problem is the PO bought it from the dealer for his Chrysler Minivan, and it has a Thule/Mopar badge. :bang: I don't have a picture of one on the hundy, so imagine it on a different "rig"…
