I have the Thule Evolution 1600. I believe it is 16 cu ft. I have a family of 4 and with a big tent, sleeping bags and bed rolls it fills up quick. I wish I would have got the 20-21 cu ft one but I have a hard time trading up and spending $200 more for 5 cu ft of additional storage.
x2 on waiting to buy on CL. I feel like there are two types of listings, ones where people list them for like $30 less than they paid, those listings sit there FOREVER. The other, are much more reasonably priced boxes that tend to go in a day or so. Keep your eyes peeled and you will get a deal.
Another CL option I see often enough to mention is when people sell a Thule or Yakima "bundle" after they sell a car. I bought a set of Thule cross-bars for an Accord, a fairing, a cargo box, and a pair of bike trays a few years back for under $400. Kept the fairing and the box, and sold all the other stuff individually. Ended up getting the stuff I wanted for about a buck fifty.
I have an old arc performance series (weird offbrand fiberglass) roof box from the 90’s that is rock solid. It has a ton of space and is low profile mounted to the factory roof cross bars. Just drove 2200 miles and no issues whatsoever at 85mph or on rocky terrain. I love having the extra space up top for bedding and long items like skis and paddles... I think it makes more sense to me than strapping a bunch of weird stuff to your roof. The real question for me is roof box or roof top tent. You can’t have both unfortunately...
Thule evolution for me. Found it on Craigslist for 80 bucks because it had been run into a garage and had 2 cracks. Fixed with epoxy and some paint and it's as good as new. It was a bit bouncy on factory crossbars but I moved it all the way to one side and it seems better. Leaves me rooms for kids bikes that way too. Was going to go with a basket and soft bag carrier but love this so far. Fits all our camping gear and paired with cooler off the back it leaves the cabin for us and our bags
Lots of people do that with sprinter camper vans. Seems like a him/hers situation on the roof. It’s a ton of storage and it makes sense with a wide rig to bias one side as most of the newer cargo carriers (not mine) open from the side instead of the center rear. It makes locating and getting things out way easier, especially with a lifted vehicle and running boards removed...
I am currently using a hitch mount basket and a fitted waterproof bag (with semi structured sides) from TCS. Basket is about ~20yrs old and was about $100 when I bought it new. The bag was clearance for $30. Works great and keeps 4 extra large duffels, bags etc) dry with easy access. Of course it limits any off road excursions but great for highway travel.
Yakima SkyBox is part time, primarily during ski season. Not sure which model it is because it is from Craigslist free. Harbor Fright folding rear rack (the back patio) is full time.
I picked up a couple of Plano boxes at $40 each for a recent road trip. Will probably get a sears box for next trip, and plano boxes should fit next to it - this would be a good solution to the " need to run 2 side by side" scenario. We have 4 kids so a lot of stuff has to go on top!
Thule Box of unknown model, it came as OEM accessory on some GM full-size SUVs. The 88" length and narrow width allows me to fit a couple of Frontrunner chairs, sleeping bags, PETT toilet etc. in single-file, so its pretty quick to pack and unpack. Perfect for everything that gets wet or dirty since we sleep inside....
