Agree. When we bought ours years ago, size was the major decision. We wanted the largest - cheaper model. The install is probably not the easiest to do, but easily doable in 10-15 min. We only use ours maximum 1-2 per year when we go on long vacation, so I am not too worried about spending extra time installing it on top of the cruiser. If I need to install it often, then maybe other models that have easier installation/mounting system may make more sense.

That is a hell of a good price for a new one, for sure. I can't find a USED Thule/Yakima in good shape for that price. At $200 and under for those brands used, they are usually trashed, altho I'm sure some gems can be found.

I use a CL $20 soft bag. While not as "thief-proof" as a box, is way cheaper, and easy on, easy off if your not looking for maximum capacity.

That Thule Atlantis 1600 looks like the perfect size in relation to the 100. Doesn't appear to stick off the end too far to interfere with the rear hatch. Looks nice.

Thank you. You're exactly right. No interference. I didn't want a huge one although they fit, this one is perfect.

Good point. I have soft bag as well. We have it in the car, folded for just incase the wife decided to buy a lot of stuffs on the trip, and we need extra cargo space. It is not too much of a problem anymore since the kid is older. No more stroller, diaper bags and toys that we have to carry around. The bad thing about soft bag is that it shows that you are carrying "stuffs". I never have problem with thief, but I also try to watch over the car - when we eat, I try to sit where I can watch the car from the window of the restaurant, that kind of thing. With the hard case, you can not tell if there is anything in there, or if it is empty.

You guys are great, thanks for the submissions. I was 99% sold one one personally, I just needed to confirm how these cargo boxes have been working out for people out in the real world on top of a 100. The conundrum is picking out the right size I guess as even the biggest one (Yak 21) will fit nicely on top of a 100. Hearing a lot of good comments on the quality of the Thule. Heck, even the Sears one gets it done I guess. Maybe a 15 (cu.ft) is all I need?? We are 5 strong with a dog like a lot of you so I have been of the thinking that the bigger the better.

REZARF and Madbodhi, do you know the capacities of your Thule??

My Thule Atlantis is 16 cubic feet. The Atlantis is discontinued but I see Amazon (where I got mine) still has a few for $470 with free Prime shipping.

I wish I could find the thread, but someone else's screen shot of it will have to do. If I remember it right, this guy's wife was making fun of his new rooftop cargo box, so he came to Mud looking for some objective feedback, but didn't do much better here.

I do t know if the "rocket" shape helps much with MPG...but my Yakima certainly didn't have a huge effect...maybe 1/2 MPG over a 1500 mile trip.

That seems to be the biggest difference between the name brands and the Sears X Cargo.

Yakima Skybox 16. Gas mileage is about 1-2mpg below what I normally get when going highway speeds (75-80mph).
I adjusted it so the tailgate opens up without a problem, even with the rear spoiler. I like it a lot.

I'll vote for the sears X-cargo, we bought ours 8+ yrs. ago and it's been on the top of several different vehicles and always worked great for our family of 5.

This is great guys, thanks. Its looking like maybe a 1600 (16 cu.ft.) could be the sweet spot between capacity and size on top of the LC. I think I will do as a lot of you have done and scour CraigsList to pick up a used one and save some $$. If not then maybe Amazon/Sears will be my second option. I'm sold on using one of these when the cabin is full with 5+dog. As REZ said, there are just too many wins with having one of these.

Thule from rei. Can't remember size, but it's medium size. Had it put last weekend! I like it. We keep tents and bedding up there. Bulky, light stuff that needs to stay dry. There is room next to it on the stock rack for a high lift, max trax, and shovel.

What mounts are you using to mount the Quick Fists to the stock rack?

Those are Yakima universal mighty mounts. Used six of those mounts, two with quick fists hold my shovel to the side rail. Four more with long carriage bolts, large rubber washers, and large knobs, all from from the hardware store attach to the crossbars, then the high lift and max trax are secured to those. Very secure, and much cheaper than getting dedicated solutions.
