I'm the new owner of an HDJ81 and the clear coat flaking is horrendous. It's on the roof, hood and the front fenders. When I stop, clear literally falls like snow from the front end. My wife says "you need to do something about that" - obviously. I don't see much point in spending a few grand for a new paint job that'll just end up with trail pinstripes so I am leaning towards bedliner, hopefully with a light gray tint to somewhat match the factory colour (I don't like the idea of having completely different coloured door jambs, etc). I'd love to do a partial job but the clear coat issue is so widespread that I pretty much need to do the complete truck. I've seen a couple of bedlined 80's but would love see more...especially in a gray-ish colour! I'm also hoping to do it myself to put the funds towards other upgrades.

Thoughts and suggestions would be great. I'm thinking of doing the fender flares in black just to mix it up a bit.

Here's mine, the only thing is that I heard that if locks in moisture between itself in the body. So depending on you're climate you might be better off with paint or just leaving it alone. Just my .02

My hdj had the same problem; roof, hood, and tail gate clear peel. Had the clear repaired, but ended up popping back a few years later.
Went with upol on bottom half of doors, and the above mentioned.
This summer, I will do the rest of the truck as I love the results, and ease of washing.
Cheers

Any others concerned with this?

Nope!!!!

How would paint be any different?
I sanded the crap out of mine, got down to bare metal in some places of spot rust, or rock chips, cleaned up, applied por 15, sanded, acetone finish, let bake in the sun a couple hours and apply. It's been 6 months And no adverse affects yet!
Ill do my arb as well as the paint is flaking off that too.

That's why you coat it with a primer/sealer before shooting the liner :)

And if you took it down to the metal during prep, hit it with an etch primer first

I used Liner Xtreeme to coat it and sprayed it on. I'm thinking of ordering another kit so I can do the door jambs and hit a couple spots I didn't coat that well due to it being kind of windy the day I sprayed it on.
